Cottage Styles........Let’s take a look at some cottage rooms from “Better Homes & Gardens” photo library........I’ve added some commentary!Black & white is a popular color combination. Paint some furniture black, and some white. Find coordinating fabric, at a reasonble price, and you have an elegant cottage porch look.Campy 50's fabrics are still affordable. Look online for original or reproductions. Paint some furniture classic 50's cottage colors for some fun.Paint a worn wood floor in diagonal squares. It visually expands a small room’s size. Build a simple cornice to hide curtain hardware and stencil it. Add some French and/or English vintage furniture finds, paiteg in pale s...
The other day I was down by the garden pond watching a beautiful large dragonfly that was flying too fast to capture on camera, so I turned my attention to photographing the water lilies. A few minutes later I heard a splash and was astounded to see that a newt had shot out of the water and captured the dragon fly that I had I had been admiring just a few moments before. The scene was reminiscent of a wildlife program the one with the crocodiles and the wildebeest crossing a river. Here are some pics I took of the empty body shells of dragonflys that have already hatched. Amazing that something so beautiful could come from something that looks prehistoricAnd a lovely butterfly for those of you that may have been traumatized by the previous photo's
On the AOI discussion board a fellow illustrator, Frog set up an Illustration Wednesday - A weekly sketch-a-thon challenge. The rules, one hour time limit for digital artists, 2 hours for traditional. This week’s theme "Eccentric" I thought I'd give it a go as it’s a great exercise for honing brush skills and producing work quickly. Here is my attempt the eccentric Patrick Moore Astronomer done in Corel Painter IX, brushes used, acrylic, blenders, dodge and burn and my own hair brushes. Time taken, One hour exactly.
...Next to art, photography is my second passion and its amazing what you 'don't' see when you take a photograph, for example I was so intent on capturing the frog I did not see the newt until I downloaded the photo's on to my PC.One of the best inventions ever is the digital camera which I take everywhere I go, as you never know when you might see something worth recording. I took these particular photos when my sister and I went for lunch the other day. Before heading into the pub we went for a walk around the village and I caught this swallow returning to her nest, it's amazing the way the animals adapt to their surroundings this particular nest was on Lacock high street above one of the cottages front door. I could have stayed there all day waiting to capture better photo's but the noises coming from my stomach would have scared the birds away LOL
...Illustration Friday - SacrificeOne of my personal beliefs are when you get married or decide to live together for that matter; you both sacrifice something of yourself to make the relationship work. Here is a digital piece “The Wedding Groom” produced in Corel Painter IXClick here to see a quick step by step progression of the Wedding Groom if you are interested.
...You can tell it's summer because we've not posted in a while. I just returned from a family vacation in Alaska, and have no idea where the other BLANK bloggers are. I also spent a good part of my summer working on a client site that's almost complete, and watching movies with my family. Which brings me to some thoughts on design and it's ability to touch the heart. After seeing some great flicks, I'm more aware of graphic design's self-imposed limitations to touch the heart. I know, it's not fair to compare apples to oranges, but I'll do so anyway. At the core (pun intended) of a medium's capability to touch the heart is the ability to tell a story in a powerful and meaningful way. Design is handicapped as a medium to tell stories. Why? Stories need the element of time to develop, communicate and mature. Film has the ability to create time through multiple image frames. Design though is like a single frame: able to communicate a message, but unable to allow that message to change over time and form a story. Unless, of course, design takes a cue from film and creates the "time" it needs to tell a story that touches the heart. What might this look like? Maybe it looks like
I was flying on a business trip some ten years ago. As the captain announced over the intercom that we were cleared for takeoff, I went through my usual ritual of grinding my teeth to powder, taking excessive deep breathes and generally attempting to obliterate the seat handles into dust like I was Hulk.
At that inopportune moment a young boy probably no older than four or five years old began kicking the seat behind me. Not soft love taps either. I mean all out foot in the spine muscle spasms. After 30 seconds of this torture during the preliminary phases of an oncoming panic attack, I finally turned around and asked the child’s mother if she could please get her son to stop kicking my seat.
She looked at me and said simply, “What do you expect me to do about it?”
At that point, I replied in as clear a tone as I could muster given that my entire body was beginning to get sucked into the seat as the engines roared to life. “If you don’t discipline your son, I will. And I guarantee you that given the two choices in his short life thus far, your son would prefer to be disciplined by you than by me. Further, you’re supposed to be the adult in charge, not him.”
I admit, I made that last bit up. While I did indee...
