Calling all mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers,... anything relating to mothers! You have got to check out http://www.liliputians-nyc.com. Heather Flottman designs and creates adorable, high quality custom clothing and barrettes. My personal favorite is the shirt that has the child's age on it. What a great shirt to wear on a birthday! Take a look at the pictures and you'll agree that Liliputians-NYC would be a great place to get a little something for your child, birthday, or shower present. I think the pictures show that this designer offers original design, attention to detail, and quality craftsmanship!

This afternoon we're following up on last week's topic of environmentally responsible weddings. Kara over at Treehugger has contributed a great article, full of useful tips and resources. Treehugger is a fantastic blog on all things "green", so check back with them regularly for environmental news and info well beyond the topic we're covering here today. I'll be back this afternoon with a few more readers' ideas. But now I give you Kara:"We are seeing 'green weddings' becoming more and more popular as each year passes. Even the " target="_blank">New York Times reported that couples are taking a new look at traditional weddings and seeing green. And with that comes many more options and tips to help eco-friendly couples reduce their carbon footprint on the big day. This past January, we saw the launch of Portovert Magazine, the only magazine dedicat...
And a quick note to mention, check back to yesterday morning's grow your own flowers article to see added photos!
...This morning we're finishing up flowers and decorations with lots of additions. Let's get right into it with this great submission from Kat from outside Philadelphia: "My husband and I had a handmade, Italian garden theme with pop flourishes of a lemon, coral and magenta palette. It was a really strong combination of colors, so we were sure to combine them everywhere. A friend did the flowers - roses andsnapdragons from Costco; lanterns and ribbon hung in the garden."Cathy Skraba creates these flower arrangement containers specifically designed to hang from chairs. Great idea, and a nice looking touch:Speaking of flower arrangements for the aisle - Andrea Katz of Bend, Oregon had this gorgeous...
Here are a few larger-scale projects if you want to get really ambitious with your crafting. The first is another great idea from ReadyMade Magazine, a homemade chuppah made of birch tree trunks and flowers. They were even kind enough to create a special link for easy-to-follow directions. My thanks to the folks RM!Carol Barclay of Rochester, NY sent in these great photos of her daughter's backyard summer wedding, featuring a tree branch arch and driveway stencils. They did a few heavy-duty projects for decorations, and their efforts really paid off: "The ceremony was under a handmade sycamore arch in the back and the dinner was under a fluttery tent in the front, so I wanted to make the path between the areas into a special walkway. I stenciled silver scrolls the whole length of the driveway! It took over 6 hours on my knees... and we had a gathering of neighbors o...

...Since there were a number of readers who contributed to this topic of environmentally friendly weddings, I wanted to squeeze in one more post. I'm starting with jewelry designer Sally Brock, owner of Fancy in Seattle, who produces a gorgeous variety of reclaimed rings. Here's Sally:"More and more I've been getting orders for custom wedding/engagement rings. I've started collecting some vintage (really ugly 80s honking gemstone rings) removing all the stones, and recycling them for a greener alternative to purchasing new stones. Each ring is custom designed, and made entirely by hand in my Seattle studio. I also work in silver, a more affordable alternative to the usual jewelry stores- as well as gold, platinum and the fancy stuff."
Wow, these two weeks flew by. Today is my last day of blogging for the handmade wedding theme, and we'll be wrapping up with a great day of handmade gift ideas. When Tony Visco and his fiance were planning their wedding, they couldn't find china pattern they liked. So instead they asked artist Yuki Murata of moderngoods to create a special registry of her unique designs for them. This idea allowed them to support an independent artist and get the tableware that suited them perfectly.I really admire the work Jenni Hopkins, who specializes in painted and embroidered monogram pieces. It's such a perfect wedding gift, but special on any occasion. These wooden bowls are produced by designer and craftsman Jim Doan. He handcrafts these original pieces in his Chicago studio and each is individually...
You have got to love Eco-Friendly products! OlovesM.com makes their bags from un-used material that companies were going to throw away. So instead of becoming landfill, the fabric turned into beautiful bags. Now that is what I call recycling!
Check out their press page and you will see that OlovesM.com is a bit hit in the Rockies. It splashed onto the scene at the Sundance Festival and continues to rapidly grow its presence.
In particular, I like the 4x8 zip bags which are perfect to go inside bigger bags. Good for kids, cameras, cosmetics, etc.. Students can also use them as pencil bags.
Happy Shopping at http://www.olovesm.com/index.php!
The following description and images are from the Gemma Redux web site at http://www.gemmaredux.com/about.html. I think this designer is very original and indie hip. The pieces are cutting edge as I haven't seen anything like it before.
"GEMMA REDUX
The handmade pieces of gemma redux are created using uniquely chosen and alluring materials. Many of these materials are vintage and are therefore in limited supply, making each piece unique and not to be duplicated. These pieces not only reflect a modern approach in their design, but they also reflect a classic elegance reflected in their vintage and recycled elements.
RACHEL DOOLEY
Rachel Dooley is a self taught jewelry designer whose love of hard, industrial materials inspires the intricate and unique jewelry she creates using stainless steel, copper, gold, silver, and brass chains. These pieces are enhanced with semi-precious gems, balancing raw, cold elements with delicate and colorful accents. Rachel is currently a lawyer in Manhattan, and her designs can be found throughout the New York City area."
Today, on the Today Show, Janice Lieberman reported how many major stores sell faux fur that really isn't faux. Much of the fur is imported from China and it comes from dogs and other animals. Basically, there are no animal rights in China and these animals are cruelly handled and killed. Some of them are skinned alive.
It was very heart wrenching to watch the segment and I really hope it deters people from buying any fur items.

Well, the downtime on Design by Fire was unexpected. I have been wanting to post this particular message for quite some time, but have had to hold off due to a number of delays that simply couldn’t be avoided.
But that’s all done now. I can now announce the latest project myself and other folks at Involution Studios have been working on recently.
What is Spivot? Simply put, its an RSS reader at its core. But don’t let that part fool you. It’s also much more. My hope is that with the design and implementation we chose, Spivot will actually wind up being a lot more for a lot more people than what you see in the current RSS offerings today.
Spivot has hints of being a Bloglines like tool, one where you can sign up for a free account and then enter your own feeds so you can keep up with your favorite web sites. You’ll also notice a few buttons across the top of the page, like “Most Read” and “Highest Rated.” These buttons switch the sorting of the currently selected content to reflect the reading behaviors of the Spivot community and thus can provide some Digg like approach to browsing media content. Further, given that the default set of feeds in S...
Creator: I imagine that right now you're feeling a bit like Alice. Tumbling down the rabbit hole?Designer: You could say that.Creator: I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he's expecting to wake up. Ironically, this is not far from the truth. Do you believe in fate, Designer?Designer: No.Creator: Why not?Designer: 'Cause I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my design.Creator: I know exactly what you mean. Let me tell you why you're here. You're here because you know something. What you know, you can't explain. But you feel it. You felt it your entire life. That there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there. Like a splinter in your mind -- driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about? Designer: The Design Matrix? Creator: Do you want to know what it is? (Designer nods his head.)Creator: The Design Matrix is everywhere, it is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window, or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, or when go to church or when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.Designer: Wh...

...I just wanted to express my appreciation to Grace for having me these past two weeks, and to all the readers who sent in emails. Also thanks so much to those who contributed articles. It was such a great experience connecting with the D*S audience in this way. I hope the handmade wedding guide has been fun and helpful to read!
...And continuing the crafty gifts theme, this afternoon's last post starts off with Karen who wrote in about Judy Lee's bookbinding tutorial for making a photo journal on her blog five and a half. Judy's lesson includes loads of pictures and very clear instructions. (So glad to find Judy's great blog!) Karen writes:"Using a photo of the couple, a sentimental place, or something from the wedding theme would be a great handmade gift; if the wedding is small the bride can even make little notebooks as her wedding favors."And speaking of photos, here is some beautiful collage work by German artist Sandra Muller posted on her blog. Sandra's work has an heirloom feeling, with all of these pretty vintage family photos. She also has an esty shop if you'd like to collect some collage materials f...
