Don't ever assume a solution is correct for your problem just because it's a pattern in a book on your shelf. Heck, the GoF book has a full chapter on the Singleton pattern, one of the leading sources of painfully tight coupling in enterprise systems. Patterns are just things that reoccur in code. Not good, not bad, just patterns. Any given pattern is probably useful in certain situations and harmful in others. Just because Fowler or the Gang of Four or the POSA guys wrote about a pattern doesn't magically make that pattern a good solution anywhere you feel like sprinkling it into your design.
When you learn about design patterns you absolutely have to pay attention to the discussion on when and why to use a pattern. It also helps to understand the trade offs when there are competing patterns.
After a bit of a hiatus and a fair amount of pestering, I'm back and ready to continue the "Build you own CAB" series. The point isn't really to go build a drop in replacement for the Composite Application Block (CAB), but rather to understand the design patterns you can use to build maintainable WinForms applications. I'm hopeful that the material in this series will be useful for both users of the CAB and those who are rolling application specific architectures sans CAB. The previous posts have been mostly written at the perspective of a single screen. For this post I want to go down to the granular control level before coming back up to finish the series with content on coordinating multiple screens and composite applications. My longer term goal is use the BYO CAB series as the kernel of a book on design patterns for fat clients and composite applications, so I'd love any kind of feedback no matter how negative.

Last week or so there was a thread on the altnetconf message board that about a usage of the Visitor pattern for validating a hierarchy of objects. At work I'm using the Visitor pattern with some frequency in my financial projects to deal with heterogeneous collections of financial elements. Over and over again I'm seeing the Composite and Visitor patterns come up as good solutions to a certain range of problems, but these patterns are often a source of almost superstitious fear to those developers who aren't familiar with them. From past experience I know that developers don't necessarily grok these patterns at the first exposure. I avoided the Visitor for a long time because it's just plain weird looking. I changed my mind only after having some positive experiences with the pattern.
I've had a post on these patterns backlogged forever, so now seems like as good of time as any to try to help introduce these important patterns. All of the example code from this post is part of my StoryTeller OSS project and can be perused to your heart's content from the Subversion repository on Tigris.

In the world of SOA, the economics of funding determines what services actually get funded to be developed. This is why we need a set of criteria by which we can assess which candidate services are a priority for inclusion in your next budget cycle. We call these criteria or gating factors, the Service Litmus Tests (SLTs). SLTs are included in SOMA , the de facto end to end SOA Development Method . Not all candidate services should be implemented as services; we may not have enough budget for that. But here this: we STILL need the functionality of the services that fail to pass the SLTs. Therefore those services still need to be implemented as part of some service component or realized by an application.Economics is hand in glove with governance and of course SOA Gov includes the issues of economics, funding and budgets and ownership.

...I agree....Brit' s style has always been trailer trash! Her sister looks better!
...hey nice blog! I can't look at Britney without wincing these days. Someone please put her in a hospital. Like, now.
...*ouch!* You've definetely picked one of the trashiest outfits Britney has ever worn! I've noticed the same about her sis, who dresses a lot better, though i haven't seen any every day life photo of hers...
...Yeah Britney has always had bad fashion sense, but putting all the pictures together like that is really overwhelming..i really do feel sorry for the way her life has turned out and it is K-Feds fault!
...yeah britney has always got it wrong, but before people found it sweet and innocent 'that poor young girl who is experimenting with her style' now she is a mum and we all know she isnt the innocent virgin we once thought no one cares about being nice any moreand i dont really think jamie is much better, she just seems to have learnt to brush her hair unlike britneyand the Buberry show impressed me as wellit was very chic
...i know britney has horrible fashion sense but i feel so sorry for her i wish she could get her life back together so she could get her two boys back and get well
...What are you talking about? Those Britney pictures you posted up look great--all 30 cottage-cheese-thighs of them look awesome.I've gotta say, Burberry looks great! Honestly... boys and girls clothing look stellar! If I was as thin and tiny as these male models (and perhaps had the cash) I'd be wearing Burberry...and then I could finally be considered a YUPPIE...except I don't really have a professional job. Blah blah..
...oh, GOSH! britney was always a horrible dresser - youre right! her sister is betterim really liking the burberry collection!
...UGGGGGGGGGGGG! Britney is such a disaster!!! Thank goodness she can't be a parent to those poor boys anymore. The Burberry is fab. Love the bright blue and the clean khaki and white.
...omg i think the 4th row of britney spears is by far the WORST her pants with the strings all tied up in the front look disgusting it kinda looks like her PUBLIC HAIR. lol ewwwwwwww gosh that was seriously horrifying.
...I don't think I have ever liked Britney's outfits that much, I've never been wowed by anything she wore. She's a total mess.
