"For Sale: The Arctic?" or Shifting Maps

With global warming jumping off everyone's tongues these days, you better be sure that the administrations that fervently deny it are gearing up to capitalize on its benefits. The world map we felt, had largely been decided, a few pockets here and there with shifting boundaries: Kashmir, Palestine, the Balkans, the occasional Pacific island, mere pockets in the sweeping map of the world. But with the Arctic ice caps melted: a whole new, massively difficult territorial conflict is cooking in the waters that are melting the glaciers and permafrost. The northern countries with claims near the Arctic circle: Canada, Russia, the United States, Norway and Denmark (through Greenland) are doing the kind of aggressive maneuvers and territorial disputes not seen in this part of the world since the Vikings and with these countries with each other in a long time. Substantial hydrocarbon reserves beneath the ice as well as shipping rights through the strait, that a few short years ago seemed forever out of reach are now up for serious discussion and substantial posturing. Who owns the land under the Arctic, currently not claimed under any international treaties?

Basel 2008: Timo Nasseri's Muqarnas II

June 5, 2008. An Islamic and Persian architectural element, the muqarnas is an ornamental corbel constructed from stone, stucco, mirrored glass, wood, or even painted onto a wall to mimic stacked tiers of pointed niches cascading from a vaulted dome. At this year's Art Basel fair in Switzerland, German-born, Iranian-descended, 34-year-old artist Timo Nasseri turned his attention from fighter jets and nuclear weaponry with his hypnotically reflective Muqarnas II (2008)...

The power of lightning

Lightning is defined to be “an atmospheric discharge of electricity, which typically occurs during thunderstorms”. A quite abstract technical definition, but does not describe what a lightnings looks alike … and especiallywhat humans think when they see and watch this. Two weeks ago I spend a day in Munique (Germany), and visited the “Deutsche Museum” (a big technical museum). It was indoor, and (only) 50.000 Volts … but a horrible feeling.
I took some pics in the darkness - and was not expecting to get such fascinating pictures, which much more look like art than like “hell”.

¿No me puteo ...

Artomatic 2008, Washington D.C.

Last week we went to Artomatic art exhibition in Washington D.C. Artomatic is the community-driven , all-volunteer 5-week art exhibition in D.C. , which draws all the local emerging as well as established artists together. Going on since 1999, this year’s Artomatic is featuring works of over 800 visual artists and 200 of musical, dance, theatric, and other performing artists. It’s being held in a 10-floor Capital Plaza I building at 1200 First Street NE.
Each one of the 8 floors is like an art gallery, but the fun thing is that you find different styles of art with almost every step – one space would have modern-style, surrealistic paintings, the other one would have photography, the next one would have junk art, and the next one would have something totally weird you won’t even know what to call it. The other 2 floors have live performances and the bar.
I did 5 floors of art only, and that was more than enough impressions and inspiration. It was great to find out that there are so many young artists in the area, with very interesting ideas and ways of expressing themselves. I took loads of photos and artist’s flyers to check their sites. Here are some...

A Dylan Delight

There is a really nice book out for people of my generation (!) - or at least, anyone who is a fan of Bob Dylan. It's called A Freewheelin' Time: A Memoir of Greenwich Village in the Sixties and it's by Suze Rotolo.
The album cover of Dylan's Freewheelin' album features a picture of a beautiful girl snuggled up to him in the street - he's got his collar up and his shoulders hunched against the cold. That girl is Rotolo and she was his first muse. She's written the book about her four years with Bob and it's a fantastic read if you're interested in that era.
It's a really good insight into him and his music and the general mood of the time.

Art and Fashion

There is so much to see over the summer, you really need to plan your cultural activities well to fit it all in. I loved the Richard Serra exhibition that is on at the Grand Palais in Paris. It's definitely worth a visit. The catalogue is really great, too. His work is just amazing, you can literally walk into it, almost.
The Festival of Art and Architecture is going to be fantastic this summer. It runs from June 20 to July 20. Check www.lfa2008.org and factor it in to your summer, definitely.
You should also try to see the Street Art Exhibition that will be on at the Tate Modern until August 25. It's well worth a visit to see the work of young artists from various countries and what they have to offer that is really compelling and unique. If you love Banksy, you'll love this.
If you happen to be in Paris - either to see the Serra exhibition or for the menswear shows coming up, definitely try to get to the Albert Kahn museum too. It's really inspirational. He was a French banker and philanthropist and he employed photographers to take pictures all over the world - of general life, really. The book that goes with it is really beautiful too - The Wonderful World of Albert Kahn.

Tribute to YSL

It's incredibly sad about Yves Saint Laurent - he was too young to die. He was for me, like for many designers, a huge encouragement and influence - there was a newness about his work that was so special.
He took it to the next stage and he just had a sparkle that no one else has. I was fortunate enough to see some of this first haute couture shows in his Paris salon - one in particular I remember was in homage to the Vietnam war and it was all in black. Then he did the famous see-through blouse in clear silk chiffon.
The audience literally took a mass in-take of breath - as if we'd been watching a firework display. Obviously the fact that he pioneered le smoking for women proved how modern his thinking was.
Pauline and I went to his last couture catwalk presentation and afterwards, in his salon, we were privileged to be able to order from samples of all his past collections, including the famous Mondrian jersey dress and all the key pieces I remember from his career. We ordered Pauline a le smoking suit from 1967 - the year we met. Then we were invited to his retirement dinner later on - with Catherine Deneuve and Loulou de la Falaise and incredible people - so Pauline wore the suit to that.
He was such a great man and it is a timeless, w...

A Week Of Art

It's been a week of art for me. One of my OBFs (old best friends) has become a true art groupie and I have happily tagged along in her search for The Arty Prince Charming.

First it was The Chapman brothers' new exhibition opening at the White Cube in Mayfair. The show was packed with what seemed the entire art, fashion, student and money crowd of London, all gulping down free beer and displaying an unusual degree of interest in the art on the walls. And quite rightly so - how sick and brilliant those two brothers are.

The oil paintings of disfigured human monsters and their vision of Nazi Hell were so amazingly strong, combined with the clammy sweat of art fervour and the odour of stale beer, my very pregnant body felt on the verge of making its own nauseous statement. Luckily I escaped to the party upstairs, where Fran Cutler greeted me with a glass of Champagne and a sound advice: "You're in the third trimester, the baby is fully developed now, so you can drink!" How could I not oblige?

Next it was the RA Summer Show opening last week. This year was a hot ticket indeed, which I realised when I called in the tickets only a few days before - sold out. Thanks to lovely Anya Hindmarch I still managed to get a couple of tickets, so I put on my new Giambat...

Electric Uma

Unlike most celebrities, Uma Thurman looks taller and more striking in person. It is the end of a long day of meetings for her, and she seems eager to get our interview out of the way.
She sits down, sips from iced coffee and focuses her tremendous cornflower blue eyes on me. I suddenly feel like the only person in the room, in that way only actors can make you feel. For a moment it feels like we are friends having a coffee in the suite at Claridges. She pitches her elegant long back forward slightly, arms casually crossed like a dancer's, ready for anything.
We start by talking about London, and European audiences. Uma Karuna Thurman's name and exotic beauty seem more European then American, and while her films are phenomenally successful all over the world, she is revered by European audiences for her work with European directors and iconic roles in Quentin Tarantino's films Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill 1 and 2. In 2006, she was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
There is an electrical charge or gravity in how articulate she is. Almost over articulate. But then she softens it with a laugh or a toss of blond hair. Her eyes, hands and voice communicate simultaneously, passionately and precisely, whether she is talking about her good ...

Cruise Collection Confusion

There is some collective confusion - even in fashion - about cruise or resort collections. The sensible question being, who take cruises anymore, and why do they justify a dedicated fashion collection?
To entice customers with the latest fashion has to offer, pre-collections (cruise/resort and pre-fall) are playing an increasingly important role in the business of fashion.
Originally an American solution to the problem of living in one season and travelling to another, cruise/resort now provides a seamless transition between seasons. It starts arriving in store in November when autumn/winter collections (in store August through November) look tired. Likewise, pre-fall collections arriving in June overlap with autumn/winter ready-to-wear.
Cruise and resort are synonymous. They refer back to a time before budget air travel when winter migration to warmer climates was a privilege of the wealthy. A relatively new concept in Europe, cruise/resort or pre-collections are quickly becoming big business. Fashion houses including Christian Dior, Chanel, Prada, and Gucci are just a few of the brands showing pre-season shows.
While they were originally a seasonal stop-gap, designers increasingly depend on the more accessible cruise/resort collections to give the...

High Maintenance Woman

Few things grate like the sound of an uncapped stiletto on pavement, or a shredded heel. I am not particularly high maintenance, but admit to having my dry cleaner and cobbler on speed dial, and exchanging Christmas cards with my seamstress.

As an expatriate in London, it took over a year for me to find a cobbler I could trust, a seamstress to call for minor alternations, and a dry cleaner with a magic touch.

Key to getting the best results is asking the right questions, and not being afraid to be demanding - a breeze for most Americans. I sometimes make a list of points to ask including, do you shave the heel down? Do you resole with leather or rubber? Can you get rust stains out?

While it may sound excessive, clothes are expensive, and it seems foolish not to have a contingency plan if someone spills red wine down your favourite dress, or the heel of your Manolo gets stuck in the pavement. However, more than just emergency care, taking good care of your clothes requires a long term view and regular MOT.

French women take care of their clothes as if they are family heirlooms or a wearable piece of art. Proof of this can be found when visiting my favourite vintage store in Paris, Didier Ludot, with flawless examples of vintage couture from t...

A Tribute to Yves Saint Laurent

Fashion rarely makes front page news or receives a tribute from the French President. Yet the death of the Algerian-born, French fashion legend and cultural icon Yves Saint Laurent, at 71 on June 1st, is a profound loss felt even by those not interested in fashion.

Yves Saint Laurent's death marks the end of an era he played a large part in shaping, with his iconic Le Smoking and liberating trouser suit for women. He was also the first designer to actively promote the more democratic ready-to-wear Rive Gauche collection and stores with the same name.

Becoming increasingly media shy in the years leading up to his death, M. Saint Laurent retired in 2002. Yet his design influence only became stronger in his absence. For example for this autumn/winter, many designers showed M Saint Laurent-inspired structured geometric tailoring for modern power suiting.

The designer currently at the helm of YSL, Stefano Pilati, regularly pays tribute to his predecessor with variations on the theme of Le Tuxedo. Yves Saint Laurent continues to inform the way we dress from the safari jacket, Le Smoking, the shift dress and trouser suit.

His extraordinary career, spanning six decades, started at the house of Dior at the tender age of 17. After Christian Dior's dea...

As we stroll through the pavilions, interviewing interesting people as we go, we've got a few interesting things going on ourselves in the CIA outpost in the Oval. Our friends Simone and Simone, better known as Invernomuto, performed the first of a series of audio/video sessions, mixing live music and images from the remainders out of the Check-in Architecture footage. An intense experience for those lucky enough (as we feel) to be in attendance. The same formula - not the same performance, since it's going to be different every time - is going to take place twice a day. Don't miss the next one.

Architecture is not building

Aaron Betsky makes it pretty clear: it's not the buildings that make architecture, it's the architects, and they don't even really need to build. In fact, architecture is more about unbuilding than building, or so says Betsky.Betsky talks about architecture like someone who is not only passionate about the building-lingo, but about life in general. It's no surprise he wrote a lot about architecture and sex, also becoming one of the main contributors to a spatial interpretation of queer theory.During his conference at Transmitting Architecture in Turin, he explained how architecture is the whole process around building, not necessary including it. Thinking, talking, experimenting with an environment's geography, landscape, history, people, relationships, culture, beauty. The exhibition he's curating, taking place at the Venice Biennale and titled Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, deals with interventions in space and landscapes aiming to make our world feel like home, without covering it with the "architecture gra...

The research is on!

Unluckily, we're not always partying. We at Check-in Architecture have a mission too: Transmitting Architecture.Next week we're going to be in Turin, in the lounge area at the Oval. There are three spaces you should check-out:- the interactive area, where you can access the internet to check out our website,- the video exhibitions, where you can watch the Carlos Casas and Invernomuto videos and a selection of missions,- the upstairs balcony where we'll be working hard as usual - and taking some video interviews - in case you want to pay a visit.Transmitting Architecture is one of the most important moments in our Check-in Architecture research, so make sure you pass by.

NYC Waterfalls

Summer in the City can be pretty damn hot, so a couple of waterfalls might just do. Although it looks a little like shaman material by someone from the rain forest or Niagara, it actually took a Dane to provide the Big Apple with this spectacular - and refreshing - kick to its already iconical Brooklyn Bridge. New York's last public art piece, commissioned by the Public Art Fund to artist Olafur Eliasson, consists in this one waterfall in the picture and three more, falling from free-standing scaffolding towers on the East river. The artist is known for its past success at London's Tate Modern, the Weather Project, worth the museum 2 million visits, and has had the kind of meteori rise softened by green credentials that makes him almost smug seeming to other artists.Being as tall as the Statue of Liberty, his new public installations will be temporary landmarks and, since the only thing more powerful than water in shifting our perception of a place is moving...

Genre, art and architecture

In order to accomplish this mission we went to Venice for Multiversity and had the chance to interview a bunch of interesting people. Here's some of the talk we had with curator Giovanna Zapperi about the relationship between gender and its representation in art.

Great Man and Poet

You know a party was a success when the police shows up, and the goodbye party for our editor and friend Andrew Berardini was definitely one. The second of the images above shows how project manager and party animal Luca Legnani Jr. explained the cops what was going on.A rough translation from Italian would be:"The party was in honor of Andrew Berardini, great man and poet. And the music was of excellent quality."We already miss Andrew's editorial statements and mid-afternoon blitz-naps and wish him a nice trip back home in LA (he's probably there right now). As for you guys, stay tuned for more Check-in Architecture adventures and videos.

Top 5 fashion tips for 2008 summer fashion

Summer is the time to take a break. You know. Kick back your heels, raise your feet on a stool and relax. Time to loosen up and go for breezy comfort. There is no need to forgo your stylish image. These 5 comfortable pieces let you stay in style and fashin. At the same time, they offer your great mileage.1. A comfortable white shirt.Get a men's style white shirt and wear it with khakis, jeans or a pencil skirt. That roomy classic goes with virtually everything in your wardrobe. For that sultry siren look, you could secure the shirt under your bust with a knot instead of buttoning it up. Or you could wear it as a super comfortable sleep shirt Its always in fashion trend.2. A pair of jeans. If you fit into your favourite pair, that would do for summer fashion. Nothing beats your favourite, broken in jeans when it comes to comfort and fashion. If your jeans are a tad too tight, go get yourself a new pair that fits. Well fitting clothing look better and make you look slimmer than too tight clothes.3. Bright, roomy, summer dressA loose fitting dress in a bright color is a hot look every summer. This is especially evident for Spring/Summer 2008 if you watch the designer fashion shows. One thing about the tent dress or roomy, loose fitting clothes that do not define your waist is t...

Recent Pics of the Kids

We started Luciana on solids.  She likes the homemade stuff well enough but the stuff in the jar makes her gag and blink and scrunch her face.  She spits it out and it gets all over.  The first two nights that I fed her rice cereal and applesause before she went to bed she slept through the night.  But that was it and then she went right back to waking up whenever she wants to, which is a lot.

Sunday I decided to take some pics of Luciana in her Sunday clothes.  I used to always do this with Emilia and Lorenzo but have failed to do so with Luciana so here are a few pics from my mini photo shoot with her.  Notice the orange spitup spot that appears in every photo.  So much for my homemade studio portait.

The pants in that last big photo... Wow. Just wow...

The Architecture of Alfred Hitchock

One cannot watch the films of Alfred Hitchcock without some sense of space. When we first heard about this book, The Wrong House: The Architecture of Alfred Hitchcock (published by 010), we thought back to all the films we'd seen and in quite a few, the space, the structures, the architecture plays a primary role in the construction of the tales. In Rear Window, L.B. Jeffries (played by James Stewart) confined to a wheelchair due to a broken leg, peeks from the back window of his apartment house, the structure of the building, and where the tenants live defining the story. Or in North by Northwest the famous scene, where villains go toppling off the largest strangest monument in America, Mount Rushmore, or even in The Birds, houses are the only flimsy protections against the fatal attacks by nature. In all of these movies, and quite a few more, Hitchcock, who worked as a set des...
