Objects, Components, Services and ...

SOA is the next step in software engineering. The service-oriented paradigm comes to an increasing degree of maturity roughly 5 years after what I consider to be the start of serious corporate adoption.

We migrated from procedural computing to object-based and object-oriented computing. Then we moved to improve the state of objects with component-based software engineering. Now, we have evolved our best-practices as an industry and in academia and have moved into the era of service-oriented computing.

The gradual adoption and service maturity can be seen to move along a spectrum we have depicted in the Service Integration Maturity Model.
Here we have seven levels of maturity across 7 dimensions from infrastructure to the business architecture.

The implication of this paradigm shift is that the best-practices of service orientation need to be integrated into the fabric of software engineering to be utilized on projects that (this is important, so you may want to mute the TV for a second) SOA may either not be part of it or a very small part of the project. Still, you would use SOA PRINCIPLES such as using the service model for a specification of the required functionality within a project or an enterprise.

Hot Looks for Fall: The New Goth

Mary Kate Olsen (source)Leave your chain wallets and spike-studded go-go boots back in 1997…the new goth is more fabulous fierce than Marilyn Manson couture. For Fall ‘08, instead venture to the dark side with caged high-heels, dark textured tights and vintage inspired lace. Oh yeah, and a latex mini for the truly daring.Surprised that goth has made a comeback? Don’t be…Mary Kate Olsen has been doing it since last year, and black and navy nail polish were also big back then as well. It was only a matter of time, really. While this look is not ideal for everyone (I’m more into color, thank you very much), brave fashionista’s can really take advantage of this vampy style and go all-out, or just add a few macabre elements to their current look.If you are ready to add some dark details to your fall wardrobe, check out these must-haves for inspiration:Caged High-Heels

Important Survey! Household/Individual 2.0

WOW!  I just counted 'em up and we have had over 5000 views of the video blogs highlighting the Household/Individual replacement.  We have also had over 100 comments, which brings me to the point of this posting... we have enough clarity to move forward in many areas, but a small handful of questions still exist.  I have created a survey that highlights the three areas we need more information.  The survey is a little wordy and has some graphics you will want to review, but overall shouldn't take you more than 5-10 minutes to complete; this short time can have a huge impact on your future usage of these highly used pages.  Please, please, please take the time to do it.  --> Household/Individual 2.0 Survey <--

Europe’s Autumn Girl Accessories For Fall: Handbags, Shoes, Jewlery & Gloves

Yes Fall is just around the corner. Alas if we are lucky we will have a glimpse of an Indian summer breaking into September up into early October. But still as the seasons change so does our wardrobe. I always feel a tang bit sad when fall comes around. The leaves start falling, awaiting the colder months ahead. But, I do love the colors of autumn. Which are rich in bold reds, sienna browns, yellows, and greens. These are the colors we can gain inspiration from! Even lilacs and lavenders, and blues are pushing forth their awesome colors. In the jewelry and accessories department. But what has Europe got going on in the fall department? Let’s find out!

London's Summertime

There is so much going on in London over the summer - it never stops. Don't miss the HBOX at Tate Modern Turbine Hall - a beautiful mobile screen  has been created by artist and architect Didier Finza Faustino and curator Benjamin Weil (and sponsored by Hermes), which is travelling around the world - it has already been to the Pompidou centre in Paris and it shows videos by eight artists. Also at Tate Modern is the CY Twombly exhibition - from June 19 to September 14. While you are enjoying a walk down by the river, visit the Hayward Gallery and visit the Psycho building exhibition, which is really fantastic. Visit www.southbankcentre.co.uk/visual-arts/productions/psycho-buildings-archi... to read all about it - but you really should try to experience it - particularly the experience of rowing a boat 15 metres above the ground on the roof of the Hay...

London Fashion Week Is Coming

On my way home passed The Natural History Museum and saw that the tents for London Fashion Week were going up - I've got two weeks to get my feet into training.
Neal's Yard Remedies on the King's Road threw a party to honour Jo Fairley, Bella Freud, Jade Jagger, Sherazade and Zac Goldsmith, in recognition of their outstanding contribution in promoting organic and natural beauty. Guests crammed into the tiny shop spilling out onto the street enjoying organic cocktails.

A Grand Day Out

London during August is just the best; restaurants normally impossible to book have tables available and when you want. Shops are empty and everyone seems chilled.
I dragged James off to Sadler's Wells for the revival of West Side Story. 50 years on the production, unchanged at Jerome Robins' request, is still just as dynamic. The costumes with multi-coloured dresses dripping in frills, so in fashion. We left the theatre desperate to dance and headed East to "rumble".
Took the opportunity of the quiet month to give the shop front a makeover. My Eric (Pink Ink), who manages to unscramble what's in my head, transformed the shop with a touch of gold.

A Virginia Summer

Taking off for ten days and as I don't want a drama with lost luggage, I've carefully packed a carry-on limiting myself to one pair of heels.
First stop, Edinburgh, which plays host to the largest arts festival in the world and one of the highlights is Tracey Emin's 20 Years at the Scottish National Gallery. This is her first retrospective exhibition in the UK and covers the full range of her work, including embroidered blankets, paintings, sculptures, films and drawings - it is deeply moving, sometimes disturbing and quite beautiful.
To celebrate the opening the gallery hosted a dinner in the grounds supervised by Mark Hix; Loch Fyne oysters, Scottish langoustine and salmon washed down with divine wines. Tracey looked amazing in Vivienne Westwood and later, at the after party, we kicked off our heels and danced till dawn.
The following morning had hoped to wander around the city but it was chucking it down and frankly didn't really have the gear for it. So it was brunch with fellow partygoers all feeling slightly the worse for wear.
Then it was back to the airport. The drive through Edinburgh was a bit of a nightmare and in spite of weather the crowds are truly going for it - in every nook and cranny there were street players, buskers and ...

If I Can't Be In Paris

If I can't be in Paris, Dover Street Market is a close runner up.
Having parked sensibly and wearing a "vintage" Yves Saint Laurent sequin jacket I just happened to have, I arrived at Dover Street, where it was heaving with fashionistas sipping Champagne.
Stefano Pilati was hosting a cocktail party to launch the debut YSL Edition 24 collection, a timeless, versatile range of must-haves: black patent trench, safari jacket, tuxedos and fabulous luggage.
I noticed that nearly all the guests paid tribute to Yves by wearing a token YSL. Respect.
Later found my way miraculously to East London and attended a fairly raucous birthday party with thankfully no mishaps.

The Fashion Omnivores

It is a challenging time for the British high street. Maybe now is the time to take stock and admit how much we depend on it for everything from our daily bread to a cocktail dress on the fly.
Inspired by YSL's new minimalism? Pop into Gap for a white collar shirt and oversized black blazer. Swooning for Prada's lace dresses or Givenchy's ruffled blouses? Zara will have different variations available before you can say autumn/winter ready-to-wear.
Global domination notwithstanding, Zara's ability to replicate runway pieces with all the right details - often before the ready-to-wear collections are available in store - makes it an important resource for the fashion devoted. Designed in Spain by an in-house team, it stands out from the majority of high street brands, which outsource production.
By keeping production and design close at hand, Zara keeps costs low, design quality high, and turn around time down to a mere two weeks. They do not claim originality, and don't hesitate to copy th...

Making The Cut

I am not one for following hair trends. Mine has been long and straight for most of my life, but there is something about the clean sharp lines of a bob that has me thinking about making the cut.
For many women, a new hair style marks a life change, a new relationship, the end of one, becoming a mother, a new era. There is something no-nonsense and even therapeutic about cutting your hair short. Long hair is lovely, but I am hard pressed to think of a woman in a powerful job (outside fashion) with long, tousled hair.
Gwyneth Paltrow's re-emergence into the limelight was marked by a neat bob; Anne Hathaway broke off her engagement and promptly cut a bob; Diane Kruger looks stunning with blond bobbed hair.
I wonder if this short shift is as much a reflection of changing personal styles as it a collective bob-friendly mood.
The decision comes down to maintenance. Shorter hair requires styling, whereas longer hair can always be worn in a ponytail. Bobbed hair conveys confidence and polish, but without styling can verge dangerously close to sorority girl or soccer mom.
Editor of American Vogue Anna Wintour said of her well-known bob that when you find a style that suits, you should remain faithful. I admire this steadfastness. There have b...

We (really) love magazines

Magazines are not only the best way to keep yourself informed in these postmodern times - actually, the Internet is probably better - but they're also both a physical and a cultural fetish, providing a sensual experience along with a brain tickle. The feel of the leafing paper - or plastic, or tissue, or whatever material you can reach with your hand - is something mag-aficionados can hardly do without. Back in May we spoke with the zine-obsessed author of We Love Magazines, Andrew Losowsky, when he came to our very home for another round of Metaflow's Signjam. We've already shown you some here, but we've got more in store for you magazine-lovers out there. This two-part videoblog features Losowsky as he goes on and on about his mag collection, talking about every piece as a newborn child softly rocked in his arms. How moving, huh?

Oyler Wu’s Pendulum Plane at LA Forum

Rendering showing Oyler Wu's convertible Pendulum Plane

August 26, 2008. Isn’t this what competitions are about: Setting parameters hoping that one of the contestants will exceed them? Oyler Wu Collaborative’s Pendulum Plane proposal for the latest LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design competition has done just that. In response to a brief asking for a gallery display system that could be stored away on site, Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu suggested a network of 16 welded aluminum units that now lines the ceiling throughout the 40x15-ft. space—and will do so permanently. I.D. asked Dwayne Oyler what made LA Forum convert to the new idea ...
