...Rashid show in São Paulo. Photo by Alisson Louback.
November 18, 2008. As pop as he is prolific, Karim Rashid is generally a good topic for design world dinner table dissention: Is he good or just ubiquitous, hard working or derivative? But walking through the current Rashid exhibit, which will run through January 4 at São Paulo’s Tomie Ohtake Institute (in a concrete-and-mirrored-pink Paulistano building designed by Ruy Ohtake), it’s easy to see why Rashid sells as prodigiously as he produces ...

...We started the conversation here, in this blog forum, re: the replacement of Household/Individual. The goal was to see the "whole picture", make it easier to add/edit/delete details, and provide an intuitive user interface that was easy and enjoyable to use. Our dev team took this project as a challenge to show off a development style that keeps them focused, accountable, and delivers what the user asked for; they blew me away!
Working with the dev team intimately on screen design, we then immediately shared those with you and many other stakeholders to identify exactly what was needed. Everything was broken down into “whole” tasks and allotted out every two weeks; quick 10 minute meetings were held every morning to identify progress and roadblocks. There were constant reviews to validate that what was being built was in align with the vision. Did it work? The proof is in the pudding, four short months later, with other projects that still demanded developer time, the first release of Household/Indivi...

...Diana Vreeland once said that, with few exceptions, "there is no such thing as a chic American". Until last week's American election I was inclined to agree.
Not to say there are no stylish women in America. Far from it, there are thousands. But chic is more than to the sum of its parts. It is a kind of cultural standard or way of life. It is present (or glaringly absent), in how you carry a conversation, throw a party, or wear your hair; it is graceful, instinctive, and not try-too-hard. The French have it instinctively. The British play with hundreds of years of tradition in an incredibly chic way.
Michelle Obama might prove Vreeland wrong. While her Narciso Rodriguez election night dress is still a subject of debate, her easy elegance on the campaign trail (she does not use a stylist), and experimentation with less well known designers proves that her instincts are good. More importantly, she is a mother of two, a wife, and a brilliant Harvard educated lawyer.
Browns Focus and Alexa Chung chose a brilliant location for their Halloween party: The House of St. Barnabus in Soho, a warren of Gothic rooms straight from a Hammer movie (and believe me, I should know).
The Rottweiler vetting everyone on the door made it a triumph when you finally got in, the reward being bangers and mash, Nobu cocktails and Tattinger. Angels and demons mixed with Draculas and vampires. Halloween seems to bring out the devil in us. Quite a party.

Julian Fellowes held the launch for his book Past Imperfect at Cadogan Hall, the dress code 1968 or 2008. I chickened out of wearing a Sixties mini with the excuse I was going on to a birthday supper - the truth being that as I squeezed into a Tuffin and Foale swinging skirt the zip shattered, splitting open the seams beyond repair.
Emma Fellowes completely stole the show wearing a shocking pink wig and PVC dress and, judging by the queue to buy the book, the launch was a huge success.
Against a backdrop of red petals a reminder that it was Armistice Day, Claridge's gave a party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Bar. Fabulously chic as you'd expect - endless Laurent Perrier and easy to manage canapés, crucial.
Great music too and guests were going for it when I left.

Fashionistas suitably dressed for posh tea in hat and heels moseyed to Flash - the new, temporary restaurant from Bistrotheque at The Royal Academy of Arts.
Wedgwood hosted the Josiah Cream Tea in a fine dining room made of hand painted packing cases. Will Broome designed the bespoke Flash Wedgwood china in witty black and white. I sat underneath the Death Star-studded chandelier, designed by Giles Deacon with 1200 crystals.
In spite of the dainty tea offered, I ordered beef tea made with sherry in true RAA fashion. I'm sure Josiah Wedgwood would have approved.
Dress code "Pirate Provocateur" was essential for the launch of Dirty Stop Out's new album and fashion show, featuring the new autumn/winter 2008-9 collection by Agent Provocateur.
Always a bit awkward when you arrive at these things having made a bit of an effort, then find that no-one else has and you're feeling slightly ridiculous. Then the hardcore arrive and you wish you'd thought of the blow-up parrot and even a wooden leg (which I'll probably get after this season in heels).
The Clarendon Cross Late Night event was blessed with good weather, the centrepiece on the square a huge umbrella, magically decorated by Harper and Tom's. A portable Aga from Fired Earth cooked soup and baked chocolate cookies and Julie's, who make the best mulled wine, served sausages and turkey burgers.
Through gritted teeth I'd like to award the best Christmas window to Stephen Ryan, whose life sized reindeer lamp is phenomenal.
The fashion business' love of all things bespoke is well known, so it was with some delight that, on a recent trip to Hong Kong, I had a chance to visit my father's old tailor.
I was wearing a pair of true vintage red golfing trousers my father had had made there 34 years earlier. Sam's a legend and proved to be a wonderful antidote to the miles and miles of gleaming be-branded shopping malls that have sprung up in Hong Kong over the last 10 years.
The process and service was seamless (well, lots of seams actually). The speed and precision of Sam's work is in refreshingly stark contrast to the fuss that tends to be made over the process of making a bespoke suit in this country.
They use the same cloth as Savile Row's finest, and measuring up to first fitting happened in the time it took me to walk to and from the Peninsula Hotel for an early evening G&T. He even threw in a tie for the old man - how's that for service?
I've increasingly become interested in contemporary art so on a recent trip to Beijing I was determined to get to visit the 798 Dashanzi Art District.
After about a half hour cab ride out to the north east of the city, you're there. The area is an ex-electronics factory compound, sprawling over an area the size of Chelsea (everything seems to be on a monumental scale in China).
It's a cauldron of design, photography and art housed in well over 100 galleries and spaces ranging from the (relatively) petite to the stadium sized. Check out ullens-center.org for a flavour.
Whilst the buildings exude a post-communist architectural grit, what the gallerists have done with the spaces is fantastic and hyper cool - some with the original Mao slogans still painted on the walls. So cool, in fact Dior were hosting a show in one of the spaces the day after I was there. If you find yourself in Beijing with half a day to spare (as you do), it's worth a trip.
Well, I won the BFC Accessory Designer of the Year yesterday, which was nice.
I've never won a proper gong before and probably, like most people, the seconds before they made the announcement, the last place on earth I wanted to be was on a podium saying a few off the cuff words in front of 400 or so fashion types. But hell, someone's got to do it and I felt greatly honoured and immensely proud of my amazing team.
Nine tenths of what I do is down to them - the other tenth felt pretty good last night.

I finally got to meet my fellow VOGUE.COM blogger, Erin O'Connor, at her BFA after party at the newly opened and decidedly pre-credit crunch interiored Jalouse.
Over the roar of the crowd and with tongue firmly in cheek, I said how impressed I was at how many friends she had. Very sweetly she told me she was most concerned that a cousin and someone she was at school with had made it - the consumate host.

This one is going to be much longer, since i haven’t had time to write properly since the middle of october up till now. I remind you, my readers, that Shocktober is our own “horror” festival, which means watching only horror/weird/freaky movies throughout the month of October. So here comes the second half of the movies we’ve watched:
Requiem for a Vampire/Vierges et vampires (1971)
Directed by Jean Rolllin
This is a trippy French vampire flick, it has a groovy psychedelic soundtrack, a lot of the movie is shot at a castle and around the graveyard, has lots of nudity and almost no dialogue. The vampires are also quite amuzing, and they have cheesy-looking fangs. We had a good laugh with this movie and enjoyed it.
Tears of Kali (2004)
Directed by Andreas Marchall
You've probably read a bunch of stuff about using COLUMNS_UPDATED, and if you've ended up here, it's not working for you properly.
Here's a snippet from an APRESS book on using COLUMNS_UPDATED()
SELECT ColumnName = [column_name]
FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
WHERE [TABLE_NAME] = & -
TableName AND ORDINAL_POSITION = @bitmaskpower + 1
Note they get the column name from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS based on table name and ordinal position.
Now below is "Columns_Updated", "Ordinal Position", "Field Name", and the calculation of the position based on the columns_updated value for a table I was having trouble with.
Not only do the positions not match after the first column (primary key), but the offset is not fixed along the list of columns. I haven't found a solution yet, but I'm working on it.
