Last post of this year

I want to wish a Happy New Year to everyone who reads my blog! and here’s a “short coverage” of what’s been going on.
Moving
We’re in the process of moving to Europe, and for the past couple of months we’ve been working hard packing a 3000 lbs container to ship it over to our destination. I’ve never done so much packing in my life, and now i can say that i am a professional packer able to produce my own custom made boxes, and my hands are still recovering from the staples, tape and paper cuts. Here’s a photo of one of the last days of packing:

Taking pictures
In between the moving business, i managed to take some photos of the fall in Virginia. This was the first fall i saw since 1999, so it was really exciting for me to remember once again that the trees can be different colors. Here are some photos and you’re welcome to check out my Fall set on flickr.

19 Exciting Examples of Green Design, Products and Architecture

Sustainability and style are what make green design, well, green. Green design balances environmental, economic, social and aesthetic concerns. Green design can go by many names: “sustainable design,” “eco-design” or “design for environment.” Green design produces buildings, products and artwork that reduces the amount of non-renewable resources. This helps minimize environmental impact and relates people with the natural environment. Green design is one answer to the global “environmental crisis” – i.e. the rapid growth of economic activity and the booming population coupled with the depletion of natural resources.
Everything from architecture to people’s bodies and computers are being covered with greenery. (Seems like it would be itchy, no?)

BuildingGreen announced its top 10 green building products for 2008. Highlights include:
Integrity block, which is a “compacted-earth block used as a cost-competitive replacement for concrete masonry units.” These blocks consist of up to 60% pre-consumer recycled content and almost half as much cement as standard concrete blocks. It takes 40% less energy to produce them.

Typography Basics: The Difference Between a Font and a Typeface

Typography is the practice of designing, arranging and modifying type. Type is defined as simply alphanumeric characters. You can arrange and modify type by changing the width, height, or basically any other characteristic associated with that type.
What are fonts?
A typeface is generally defined as the specific letter form design of an alphabet. Typeface talks about the style of the letters. A font is a collection of all these letters of a typeface. A font generally means a bold, italic or roman type, while a typeface means a consistent visual appearance or style. When you say I’m using Times New Roman, you’re talking about the font – the collection of that style of typeface.
Typefaces versus fonts
Many people use these words interchangeably, to the chagrin of many designers and type enthusiasts. It’s easy to forget what the words mean because they are so intricately related.  Mark Simsonson on Typophile has a great, somewhat clear definition: “the physical embodiment of a collection of letters, numbers, symbols, etc. (whether it’s a case of metal pieces or a computer ...

7 Essential Must-Read Resources for Designers

Designers working in Web and print, or Web or print, often use many, many types of programs from Photoshop to WordPress. It can be hard to remember everything you need to know – all the shortcuts and such, that make your job a lot easier. I had that same problem so I found some “Cheat Sheets” or help docs that I have printed out and plastered to my wall. I thought others might find this useful as well, so here’s a list and links to the PDFs that you can print out.
WordPress Help Sheet from WPCandy and Liquidicity. You get basic template files, PHP snippets for the templates, PHP snippets for the header and other extra codes like one that splits up your content into pages. Since I’ve used Blogger and WordPress, this has definitely been a big help so I don’t get them confused.
Type Classification eBook from Jacob Cass helps designers learn the basic foundations of type. Don’t snub your nose – you could probably learn something! Many designers don’t learn this type of stuff in their classes at school and those designers ...

20 Inspiring Logos

7 Inspiration Tips for Graphic Designers

All designers go through designer’s block. You can’t be creative 24/7. Here are some tips that will help you get inspired to design and hopefully let the creative river in your mind flow.
kusut-masai.blogspot.com
1. Watch a movie. This isn’t to zone out and hope something pops up subconsciously (although, sometimes that does happen – yay!). Watch a sci-fi or fantasy movie that includes a lot of outrageous scenes like The Lord of the Rings. Sometimes seeing architecture and paying close attention to the graphics of the movie, rather than the storyline, can give you some design ideas. It’d be best if you have seen the movie before so you can focus on the graphics and scenery.
2. Go to the zoo. It’s amazing what animals can do for us. By relaxing at the zoo and seeing all the different stripes, spots and animal prints you are almost guaranteed to see something inspiring that could be turned into a great-looking poster or logo.
3. Go to a museum. This might seem obvious, but try going to a museum that you haven’t been to. Go to a children’s museum or an American Indian museum. Try going somewhere specific instead of your run-of-the-mill museum. Try going to a museum that you’re not sur...

Photoshop for Beginners: Creating a Metallic Surface

Sometimes we all have the need for a metallic surface in our design. Many designs and backgrounds incorporate a metal-look into them, I’ve seen folks apply this effect on their printed business cards and it turned out pretty cool. But how do you make one from scratch? This tutorial will walk you through the process of creating your own metallic surface so you can begin incorporating this look into your designs.

1. Start with a new document by going to File –> New or press Ctrl + N and make sure the settings are 400 px.

2. Click the “Default Foreground and Background Colors” button or press “D.” This will give you black for the foreground color and white as the background.

3. Press and hold on the Paint Bucket Tool or Gradient Tool and the select the Paint Bucket Tool.

4. Create a new layer by clicking on the “New Layer” button in the Layers window.

5. Using your Paint Bucket Tool, left-click on the canvas to paint a black layer. Then go to Filter -> Noise -> Add Noise.

6. Make the Amount 400%, the Distribution to be Uniform, and make sure the Monochromatic box is checked on press OK.

7. Go to Filter -> ...

Best of 2008 Print and Web Design

Best Ways to Enhance Photos

Shopaholic

Shopping has never been one of my great loves but since spending time at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and particularly Beijing I'm having a wobble. The shops are an essay in retail interiors and put some of our more recognisable places of luxury shopping to shame.
Aside from the brands and how up to the moment the buying and selection is, the spaces and furnishings are truly inspiring. Coinciding with the trip to Hong Kong we were refurbishing our shop in Hans Road. It took all my power not to call the contractors and slam on the breaks immediately while I had a re-think!
There is a real belief in Hong Kong that shopping and the shopper should be respected and honoured. After seeing the Lane Crawford personal shopping suite, my very grand room at the Raffles Hotel seemed a bit mean - I asked if I could move in!

Crazy Little Thing Called Koons

One of the best exhibitions happening at the moment is Jeff Koons in Versailles.
It's so weird and wonderful - the modernity and kitschness of Koons against the equally bling, old setting of Versailles.
I've not been - yet - but my friend's daughter went and sent me some pictures. I just thought, "How bonkers it that?" It's wonderful.

A Christmas Conundrum

It's a nightmare for Pauline to find Christmas presents for me. We've been together so long, we've given each other most things - the camera, the piece of jewellery.
She does ask what I want, and I have to say, "I'm sorry, but..." There's really nothing I need.
The best presents we've ever given each other are to do effort, not money. In the past, Pauline's given me drawings, or other things she's made, like tapestries, or even things she's commissioned a carpenter to make. They've been my favourite presents from her.
In a world dominated by cash, it's hard to find something that comes from the heart. So that's what we try to do for each other.

...

House Party

We've got these new bag designs for Christmas - they're limited edition. It's just a little something extra for the customer.
We've got an in-house graphic designer who designed these, based on our stripes but turned into a snowflake. We do everything in-house - print, marketing, everything. We've even got two architects now, who design the stores. It means we can be spontaneous and do things like this; it means there's not too much of what I call "treacle" - red tape.
I have a pink shop in LA because I just decided, I want a pink shop - no worries about brand identity and all that, I could just do it. That's the advantage of the in-house team.

...

Crunch Time

This credit crunch bag is a real hot seller. It's only a tenner and it's just a bit of fun. We sold 70 in one shop on the first day! Pauline is putting all the presents she buys into it.
The attitude we are taking to the credit crunch is: don't panic. Stick by your guns. Be brave. Be positive.
I always think taking 30 per cent off equals "we're worried". So we're doing lots of positive things - like my store in Milan is having a late night opening where we're doing wine-tasting too and last Wednesday, I made a personal appearance at my shop in Nottingham so that customers could come and buy something for me to sign for them.
For me, it's all about making an effort on our part - doing something personal, something for the customer that they don't normally get, rather than cutting prices.

A Wedding To Remember

Off to my son Will's wedding in New York - what purports to be the Rock 'n Roll wedding of the year.
My luggage included his suit by James Long, The Dress with five metres of train squashed into a laundry bag, another with props for the venue (20 Union Jacks, a silvered concrete tortoise with wings for the cake), and then, there was my outfit. Somehow dragged it into New York and arrived at Le Jollie, described as Brooklyn's newest boutique hotel (was this another Costes?), only to find it situated under a flyover where the homeless had gathered snuggled into sleeping bags.
The walls of the hotel so thin I could hear the man next door snoring - or was it the neighbours under the flyover?
The following morning headed over to the wedding venue, a converted warehouse and a favourite location for photographers. We were instructed to tiptoe as Steven Meisel was shooting and commands complete silence; not that easy, as the band was rehearsing and props - as in a life size elephant and horse - were being unloaded.
In the evening the family hosted a cocktail party at Norwood for all the guests that had travelled from far and wide. Let it be said that Nor...

Hat's That

Flew back from a weekend in Ibiza just in time for the British Fashion Awards - always a glam night and a chance to "go for it".
Pulled out the Couture dress I'd worn at the Dior Ball in Versailles, the tulle train still covered with dried grass and leaves and I'm ashamed to say even the chewing gum which I never did get out. Ronaldo from across the road at Julie's had to fasten me into it; it was non-negotiable on my own.
Difficult to accommodate the height of my Stephen Jones hat in a cab but I solved it by lying across the back seat rather ungraciously.
Swarovski, who sponsored the event, had given Lawrence Hall an Art Deco look with dripping black and gold crystals and huge chandeliers over the tables. The fashion pack, all designer branded, were looking fantastic.
I was thrilled to be on the same table as Stephen J...

Sweet and Low

I used to brag with more than a little bravura that I could practically run a marathon in high heels. Until all of sudden after a twisted ankle, I had a hard time lasting an afternoon in my highest heels.

It is not just the sore feet I suddenly found intolerable, but the pitched forward - even for those who know how to walk in heels - angle you have to adopt to stay upright. I am dreaming of the perfect flat shoe.

Aside from some inspired flats from Prada and Miu Miu, they mostly fall in one of two categories; cute and girlish with sparkles and bows (it is almost impossible to find flat shoes without a bow somewhere) or conservative orthopaedic styles, with little in between. It wasn't until I started looking for more options that I realised how few there were. This lack of choice representing a fashion blind spot.

What accounts for this woeful lack of inspiration? After all some of the most stylish women in the world wear flat shoes; the French, and any self respecting woman who lives in a city with cobbled roads. Loafers, ballet flats and low heels, while sensible, ...

2008 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Unfortunately, the 2008 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show has come to an end. Tons of beautiful swimsuit models fluttered across the stage each wearing an elaborate set of wings. Please try your hardest (pun intended) to prevent yourself from kissing and/or licking the screen. Here are some hot photos of Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, 2008

What To Consider When Designing From Web to Print

For Web-only designers, you know what platform you’re going to be working on. You know that no matter what you do, it’s going to be on the Web. In the print world, you need to first decide what kind of print material you’re going to design. Does the company need a direct mail postcard, brochure, poster or flyer?
Selecting Your Printing Pleasure
One thing you have to consider with print design is portability. What will make people pick up this piece of paper and take it with them? Print does encompass including URLs, but you need to gauge where exactly the best place to put the URL is on the printed piece. And with no search engine or reviews to guide people to pick up a brochure, your design is that much more important. It has to follow the same design idea of the Web to grab someone’s attention in precious few seconds (the most time you get to capture attention is 5 seconds according to research).
You also need to consider what you want the printed piece to accomplish. What i...

Video: Tour the New Blu Dot Store

Blu Dot's new retail shop, located at 140 Wooster Street in Soho

December 16, 2008. Last month, on a strip of Soho that's fast becoming Greene Street's younger, hipper, more affordable design cousin (DWR's Tools for Living is next door), the Minneapolis-based furniture company Blu Dot quietly opened its doors. Located in a 2,500-square-foot, bi-level space originally designed by Nick Dine for Stüssy, the store's bones—poured concrete floors, gorgeous milled-steel stairs that reportedly cost six figures to manufacture and install—remain largely intact; Blu Dot made the space its own by peppering the collection with vintage finds culled from thrift stores around the company's Minneapolis HQ. (A neon-orange chainsaw cover by the Swedish company Husqvarna can be yours for $99; a turquoise Remington typewriter is sadly only for display.) In our video after the jump, Blu Dot's Hold Steady–listening, Japanese movie–starring, blueberry vodka–drinking founders Maurice Blanks and John Christakos take us on a special tour of their new digs.

American Design Club Call for Entries: Color Show

If BarberOsgerby were American, they might have submitted their Iris table for the American Design Club's upcoming color-focused exhibition

December 29, 2008. Cost of a booth at the Salone Satelitte fair in Milan: several thousand Euros. Cost of a spot in an exhibition organized by the American Design Club, a new platform for emerging designers: $35, provided your work is selected. Considering there's a recession on, you'd have to be daft not to give it a shot—now's your chance to submit for the Club's upcoming Color Show ...

Néonata Furniture at Pierre Bergé Inspired by Oil

Magma Under Golden Moon by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance

December 22, 2008. For Brussels gallery Pierre Bergé & associés, French designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance of Néonata has created a series of unique furniture pieces based on natural forms. Through January 23, the exhibition, entitled Black Tide Under Moonlight, captures the ambivalence that dogs us on the subject of fossil fuels, presenting congealed petrol-like puddles, as if the vestige of an oil spill, that encourage reclining as much as reflection ...

Design Miami Video: Al-Sabah gallery preview

December 9, 2008. SOLD OUT: The Dubai gallery Al-Sabah Art & Design could have hung a sign on the door proclaiming its house-clearing success in Miami, but that would have been tacky, right? Kind of like the folks we saw drive their yacht up to the dock at the Standard Hotel pool, already clad in swim trunks? Er, in any case, Al-Sabah announced its forthcoming arrival on the scene (it opens in March) with a collection of work by Pieke Bergmans and Lebanese duo Bokja, and we filmed the designers discussing their work ...

Design Miami Video: Ligne Roset

December 15, 2008. Not everything at Design Miami was designed as a showcase for editions: At a new Didier Gomez–designed 7,200-square-foot showroom in the heart of Miami's Design District, the French furniture brand Ligne Roset hosted an "Emerging Design" exhibition simply to champion its young stars and to preview Confluences, a new seating line by Philippe Nigro set to officially debut at next month's Maison & Objet. On view were serpentine, mesh-covered lamps by Swann Bourotte, lacquered glass vases by Alban-Sébastien Gilles, and spindly metal lights by Nathalie Dewez. Click the video above for Antoine Roset's personal tour of the exhibition, or click through the jump for Brussels-based Nathalie Dewez's description of her Lamp 06.

Design Miami: Starck's IconBrickell opening

IconBrickell's spa, one of three places in the complex to take a dip

December 10, 2008. We didn't get any good party pictures at the opening of Philippe Starck's extravagant new IconBrickell condo complex in downtown Miami last week (though we did spot Marcel Wanders and his posse making an entrance, fresh off their own mega hotel/condo opening two days before). We can, however, describe the scene: A line of fancy cars waiting to pass through the 22-foot-tall Easter Island–style columns surrounding the drive, a mob scene at the door negotiated by intense security checks and invisible-ink hand stamps, a hand-rolled cigar bar on the two-acre pool terrace, and some lady wearing the most amazing skin-tight silver sequin pants we'd ever seen ...

Campana Brothers Design Set for Peter & the Wolf

Guggenheim's Peter & the Wolf set by Estudio Campana

December 15, 2008. You can't be a hero if you don't take risks is the moral to the tale of Peter & the Wolf, and don’t the creators of the Guggenheim's Works & Process program know it. Today and tomorrow, W&P is presenting the last of a dozen 30-minute performances, featuring scenography designed by Brazil's Estudio Campana. This year’s Art Basel/Design Miami Designers of the Year, Humberto and Fernando Campana used materials as rudimentary as industrial-strength cellophane, soda bottles and wood scraps to create the meadow where Peter sets out to catch a wolf ...

Shanghai Biennale 2008

Monument of Sugar

Design Miami Video: Studio Job's Bavaria for Moss

Bavaria, a new marquetry collection by Studio Job for Moss, on view this week at Design Miami

December 4, 2008. On Wednesday, we hit the Design Miami fairgrounds, this year located inside an elegant temporary tent structure by New York architects Aranda/Lasch. First up: Studio Job's Bavaria collection for Moss, five pieces, each in an edition of six. Last year, a suite from the Belgian duo's Robber Baron collection was scooped up within the first hour of the fair; whether the New York retailer can this year pull off a similar feat remains to be seen. In this video, Moss's Los Angeles director Dane Jensen talks about the new collection...
