NY Fashion Week Fall 2009 Runway Shows

The much anticipated New York Mercedes Benz Fashion Week began on February the 13th, showcasing Fall 2009 runway collections from high profile designers like Jason Wu and Rodarte as well as fashion veterans Dianne Von Furstenberg, Marchesa, etc. This event, a bit subdued amid the financial gloom and void of fashion powerhouses who opted out this year for smaller, more private shows -- like Vera Wang, continued on to define and mold trends for the upcoming fall season!Rich, lavish colors -- velvet and rouge reds, dark tones, deep colored metallics seem to capture a new level of seriousness. Another common theme among designers this year is fur. I know animal lovers might be cringing at this moment, but designers will never cease to include hints of regal texture in their line-up.How do you feel about the Fashion Week presentation this year?Pleasantly surprised? Understated? Overrated? Please share your thoughts!RuffianRodarteNicholas K

Fellowship One APIs - Past, Present, and Future

With the up coming Fellowship One RESTful API we wanted to take the some time and look back on our other two APIs and reflect on what we intended them to be and what they actually became.  We looked at the their interfaces, authentication, resources, versioning, protocols, logging mechanisms, "debuggability", etc...  What we found out was that in the world of "API" nothing ever ends up like you intend.Fellowship One Data Exchange:  A very powerful XML RPC API that was specifically designed to address massive data import and export needs.  It's ridged pinpoint interface allow users to build simple data presses, which move large amounts of data between disparate systems.  A few years into the product's life we introduced the ability to do synchronous transactions - a decision that completely changed many consumer's usage patterns.Serendipity

Californian Dream

What is there not to like about California? Apart from some suspicion about lifeguarding or going blond as a viable career option, the golden state seems to have an edge on the rest of us. Two weeks in the sunshine was enough to convince me that maybe, rain, snow and cold are overrated.
The highlight of a recent trip was my stay in Napa Valley. The US has a reputation for putting practicality before indulgence, but Napa seems to live by the dolce vita principle with more Michelin starred restaurants than locals.
Good food and even better wine make this my new favourite place to visit. After several days with family, we stayed at the Milliken Creek Inn and Spa for a few blissful days. Reading two books in four days is testament to how lovely and spacious the rooms are, with open fireplaces and windows overlooking the creek.
This cosy twelve room converted stagecoach house, turned luxurious bed and breakfast, feels more like staying with well heeled friends rather than an impersonal hotel. Daily wine tasting at the Inn with local vintners gave us a good steer on the local wine, and a massage at the spa after hours of wine tasting was the definition of a perfect day. Unlike the established vineyards of France and Italy, Napa is a relative newcomer. ...

New York round-up - Emily Zak

The current climate may be more challenging for fashion designers than past seasons, but there was no shortage of inspiration at New York Fashion Week, which begs the question, do leaner times make us sharper or more resourceful?
Whether it means reigning in your love of eating out by learning to bake a perfect soufflé or making the most of your wardrobe, there is something to be said for weeding out what is unnecessary and focusing on your strengths. The same applies to many of the shows last week in New York.
Marc Jacobs' knack for reflecting/shaping the collective fashion mood makes his show equal parts bell weather and hot ticket. Eighties references showed up in the use of vibrant colour and goth/punk ideas, taken straight from the club scene of Jacobs fashion student days, but were brought up to date and therefore irresistible.
The goddess of goddess dressing, Donna Karan, focused on what is tried and teste...

Kaiaphas at Winter Ball 2009 in Tel Aviv

Yeah and exactly in 1 month after the party happened, i am posting my impressions and photos of it. Cuz i’m both busy and slow. I’m trying though. So, last month we were hosted by Vulgart ppl in Tel Aviv at a goth winter party, where Zhyin and me played a 2-hour dj set. The party was nice, we enjoyed playing. Some people tried to speak Portuguese to me, and some continuously asked for Rammstein, but this too will pass . Afterwards we got good feedback from the crowd and that was very pleasing to hear. Here are photos of me and Z dj’ing, a short video with a terrible sound and our awesome dj-set, which i rendered some days later in Ableton Live. So that everyone can listen and dance.

Duffy wears Ruperts shoes to the Brits

It seems I was at the wrong do on Wednesday night. While I was stroking my beard over at the frightfully important Le Corbusier private view at the Barbican "the girls" were taking over the Brits (don't boys make music anymore?). I was very chuffed to see that Duffy picked up three gongs wearing my shoes!

Rupert is tempted by antique glass

I can only hold my love of good glass in check for so long. I was innocently using Grays Antiques (www.graysantiques.com ) as a cut through from South Molton Street, when a set of unusual glasses caught my eye. Eight 1930's Lalique champagne glasses: squat quaich-like bowls with small glass bosses round the base to stop your fingers warming the fizz - beautifully designed and perfectly combining form and function - might as well shoot me now.

Rapha was set up for the purest (read slightly old school) cycle enthusiast - Sir Paul is a noted fan. They shun the normal cycling apparel outlets - there is a real integrity to the company and their clothing - they have their own team, spread the good work through Rapha 'rides' and publish a very handsome magazine called Rouleur (http://rouleur.cc )

Paul Smith celebrates 25 years of LFW

It's the 25th anniversary of the British Fashion Council this season so I went to the photo shoot yesterday to celebrate with Harold Tillman, Hilary Riva, Erin O'Connor and John Rocha. We're pretty much all set for our show on Monday night - but first Pauline and I are off to Paris tonight for the private view of the Yves Saint Laurent auction and the party in the Grande Palais afterwards.

The sale is going to be amazing - it has a six book catalogue featuring Picassos and Mondrians and all kinds of amazing things at pretty substantial prices. I'm not sure if I'll buy anything - maybe one or two! One of the Mondrian paintings on sale is a very famous one from the time he first began to deconstruct the painted landscapes that he began his career with. It's all in...

A London Guidebook

What do to in London during Fashion Week when you have a little bit of time out? You might want to see the Le Corbusier The Art of Architecture exhibition at The Barbican, which started on February 19. If you are only here for a day or so, it's definitely worth seeing but if you have longer there are gong to be all sorts of talks and films and special events throughout - so it might be a good one for lovers of architecture.
More in town, as it were, there if the Gerhard Richter exhibition at the Natural History Museum. He's dead famous for his paintings of all sorts of things but these are his portraits and they're really beautiful.
If you're a fashion designer or a graphic designer - or artistic at all, in fact - you should maybe take in the Tate Modern. There is an exhibition of 350 works by Rodchenko and Popova called Defining Constructivism. I did a collection inspired by constructivism a few years ago after a visit to St Petersberg and Moscow - and the first Franz Ferdinand album cover was inspired by Russian Constructivist art in fact.
In the centre of town but not open at the weekends is the Hamilton's Gallery in Carlos Place - rig...

From snowy London to Milan

I'm in Milan at the moment at the fabric fairs. It's been a great week - we had really positive reviews of the menswear show and a great response to my Liberation guest-edit. So now I'm onto buying tie fabrics for spring/summer 2010 and then I'll be onto the suit fabrics - which aren't quite as fun as the ties, obviously. And our numbers are up too - January is up 1 per cent on retail, which is really good news.
The snow on Monday made for a pretty out of the ordinary day. I drove in my Mini for my usual morning swim at about 5am and was the only one in the pool, obviously. Only the security gurard was there - but I know where all the lights are, etc, so I can let myself in. Driving was a bit like snowboarding on the streets of London as very few of the roads had been gritted by then. I arrived at the office at about ten past six - the cleaners are usually there by then and they let me in because I'm not allowed keys (I always lose them and get in to trouble), but there was nobody there. So I waited around and called Japan and did a few jobs there and then sat and did some work in the Mini with the engine running.
Then I popped around the corner for a bacon sandwich and a cup of tea - I never usually have a bacon sandwich but I just needed one that morning - an...

Virginia's Valentine

London's all loved up and my neck of the woods has gone bonkers. Julie's is covered in pink hearts, Harper & Tom's have taken over the square with romantic displays of posies and my window is full of evocative Victorian Valentine cards. Bless!
Then we head over to Dover Street Market where Katie Grand is celebrating Valentine's Day, with the launch of her magazine Love. A large bed installed in the basement was covered in limited edition clothing, Chloe, Luella, Pam Hogg, Stella and Victoria Beckham.
Fashionistas scrambled to pick up a bar...

Christie's preview YSL's art legacy

Christie's gave a champagne cocktail party, the only way to preview Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge's collection is with a glass of bubbly in your hand. Quite mind blowing! Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Leger, a few Old Masters and some incredible furniture.
The blown up photographs of rooms showing the works of art in situ was fascinating. Lets hope someone buys the complete room sets. Picasso's Poulet, verre, couteau, bouteille hung on the wall in Yves and Pierre's kitchen - how extravagant.
Me? I'd take the library with 18th Century allegorical busts representing the continents with bonkers headdresses, very Stephen Jones.

Camilla Morton's book launch

London has thawed out, what a relief to get out of snow boots and head off to Bliss South Kensington, for exotic Campari cocktails and toast Camilla Morton's successful book 'A Year in High Heels'. Guests were given a Bliss manicure whilst reading passages from the book, what a gorgeous way to spend an evening.

Virginia Bates reports from Christian Dior Couture

First thing Monday morning, St Pancreas station is buzzing with parties of kilted guys still high from Burns Night, fashionistas on their way to Paris and yours truly in gold lamé coat. It could have been a John Paul Gautier show.
Arriving at Musée Rodin for Christian Dior one is immediately transported into the glamorous world of Haute Couture: clients in their finery and uniform six-inch heels precariously teetering across the cobbled forecourt. I spotted two go down but then, as they were saved by gorgeous young men in attendance, it was almost worth the humiliation. Michael Howells created a dramatic setting using huge stained glass panels which the models glided through.
The collection, inspired by Flemish Old Masters Van Dyck and The Vermeer: a sensation. Huge crinoline ball gowns were turned inside out to reveal every exaggerated detail. The girls giving a master class on balancing, strutted down the shiny catwalk on insanely high pedestal shoes.

In the late 1990s, Majora Carter obtained a $1.2 million Federal Transportation grant to design the South Bronx Greenway, a planned 11-mile-long waterfront park. In 2001, she founded Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx), an environmental nonprofit that secured tax breaks for green roofs, launched the country’s first green-collar job-training program, and put horticultural engineers to work in the neighborhood. Along the way, Carter, now 42, picked up a MacArthur “genius” award and commentator roles on national television (including the Sundance Channel) and radio (NPR). Housing Project by Candy Depew

February 3, 2009. Curio connoisseur, hardware hobbyist—it doesn't matter how you define Candy Depew. When it comes down to it, she just really, really likes decorative art. The Philadelphia-based artist takes pride in beautifying living spaces with her playful and provocative collection of objects, currently on display at Philadelphia University's Design Center in an installation called Housing Project. Depew sprinkled the former living spaces of The Design Center with self-made objects: porcelain trinkets in the bedroom, custom-printed fabrics swathing pillows in the den, handmade ball gowns dressing mannequins in a speakeasy salon. The former Pew fellow was inspired by the five years she spent as an artist-in-residence at various programs and by her subsequent housesitting for more than 50 residences during that time. Video: Droog Opens A Store in New York

Droog co-founder Renny Ramakers

February 26, 2009. Last night, Droog injected some much-needed levity into the New York scene with the opening of its first freestanding store in the city, on Soho's Greene Street. The interior was designed by Jurgen Bey (Studio Makkink & Bey), and the commemorative ceramic cups given out to partygoers were by Jan Broekstra. We shot a video of co-founder Renny Ramakers explaining the idea behind the blue foam funhouse that serves as the store's centerpiece—turns out it's for sale, too. For pictures and more information on the store interior, stay tuned for our June issue New + Notable section!
