...When Jaime Hayon debuted his fanciful bathroom range for ArtQuitect in 2005, the design world swooned. The line’s plasticine-baroque styling and Surrealist joie de vivre became the Madrid-born talent’s signature, and suddenly every manufacturer had him on speed dial. In the three years since, Hayon has churned out chairs for BD Ediciones, shoes and stores for Camper, lamps for Metalarte, figurines for Lladró, furniture for Moooi and Established & Sons, fabrics for Bernhardt Design, a new collection for Baccarat, plus a host of installations and interiors. To accomplish all this, he’s lived the life of a workaholic—scarcely sleeping, always on a plane—but at 35, his priorities are changing. I.D. recently caught up with him at his new home base in London’s Soho.

...I was invited to address the good ladies of Zurich by one of our newer customers: an exciting new store called Lovers Lane (www.loverslane.ch). Armed with only a Sharpie, I threw myself at their mercy. The local Swiss and French press were very sweet and the customers hugely knowledgeable. Fortunately, before I had to address the masses with a few chosen words, a customer told me my shoes were "hingucker" - literal translation "a real eye-catcher". Every time I tried to say it people fell about laughing. I'm sure I'd mangled it into something very rude - hope so!
Things to do in Zurich with 10 minutes to spare - have a Movenpick ice cream and look at the lake.

...This was extremely tough, there were so many great submissions!
We loved what Marisa did with the garments and accessories in Weekend Sewing and how she made simple revisions to them in order to work for her, but in the end what we loved most about Marisa's entry was the lifestyle it was designed around. Nothing fancy, just lots of little simple wonderful things that we all love about summer: fresh berries, cowboy hats, and a backyard tent, days spent at the beach and at Farmers Market... we hear you, sister.
As I looked through the entries yesterday, over and over again, I began to imagine how great it would be if fashion shoots for magazines and catalogs showed clothing worn in the real-life scenarios that so many of you shared so openly in your sketches and designs. Don't get me wrong, I read (and love) Elle front to back every month, but I am finding your ideas about style and fashion (along with your real lives!) to be much more inspiring than anything I have seen there as of late.
Thanks to all of you for your wonderful submissions!
And congrats to Marisa, who will be receiving a big box of fabric and a free copy of Weekend Sewing.

I have just been in Milan, for the Milan Furniture Fair, as I was asked to curate a space for the British Consulate and British Trade & Investment in the beautiful Villa Reale. It is a temporary space called the Design Embassy and the idea of the space is to create a meeting and work place for visitors to the Milan Furniture Fair - and to show a selection of British design products, a short film showing British design achievements from the past and the present and "my room".
The room I was given is magnificent; overlooking a park, so lots of green outside, with full height windows. The idea I had was to put something that was really wrong into the space, I chose flowers as the feature, to link in with the garden, using a selection of my images photographically printed onto fabric used as curtains. The contrast of the classic room against the kitsch curtains seemed to work very well - in fact the boss of the Villa Reale was very unsure about us taking down his classic curtains and putting ours up but he has now asked if he can keep them!
As the Furniture Fair is about new ideas, furniture and product, I selected some British designed furniture from the company Moroso to put into the space. I used furniture by designers Ron Arrad, Tord Boontje and Ross Love...
It was Thursday April 2 when I got a strange email from Sophie, our marketing manager: " The special product placement was for Michelle Obama!!" she said. "We sold them Laratella bracelet in rose gold without knowing who it was for!"
Underneath there were lots of links to newspaper headlines. I clicked on them and I still couldn't understand - there was no photo of Michelle wearing our bracelet. It was only once I started reading the articles that I finally got the full picture; she received our bracelet as a present from the Camerons. How cool is that?! Wow!
I had to call my mum immediately. I have seen my pieces on people like Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Thandie Newton and lots of other celebrities but nothing quite compares to Michelle! She is someone whom everyone in the world has heard of. Even people who have no interest in fashion, film, television o...
On many occasions my friends would call me: "So-and-so copied your bracelet, necklace, earrings, (you name it), why don't you do something about it?"
So often we do. This is how it works:
Our lawyer writes them a letter saying they infringed the copyright (£500 down the drain). Their lawyer writes a letter back saying no way. Our lawyer asks me to provide the proof that I designed it - and that I designed it before they did (two days of going through archives, old drawings, press clippings, some phone calls and emails later). Another £2,000 down and our lawyers provide them with the proof. They dispute it. Going back and forth until we get fed up and say that now we will take them to court.
Our lawyer warns us that just to file the lawsuit will cost us around £30,000. We say we don't care. Then he warns us that if we lose it may cost us upwards of £300,000. We say we don't care. We will sell our houses, we will fight them till the end. I feel like Robin Hood. I know I am in the right and they are in the wrong.
Then I guess they realise that we won't back down. Shock horror - this small label is willing to fight them till the end. All of a sudden they say "let's settle it" and by then our lawyers have already cost us around £20,000. Finally th...
Took the day off and caught the 8am train to Birmingham. I normally use Eurostar, so on arrival I expected to be in Paris. Even more confusing was being met at the NEC by 20 Storm Troopers. It could have been the menswear shows!
I was a guest at The Memorabilia Exhibition with my Dr. Who hat on, as they say (having appeared in the series as a character called Dyoni in the Sixties). It's a well known fact that Stephen Jones took some inspiration from the Daleks and look where that got him. Who knows what the dress code is for going in and out of a Tardis, lace and lamé is probably a good bet.
I spent the day with characters from Star Wars, Star Trek, The Carry On films and of course Dr. Who. I was chased by a Dalek and received a proposal of marriage on stage during a question and answer debate. The whole event could have gone to my head had it not been for the fact that my heel broke coming off stage and I had to rather unceremoniously limp back to London.
Stephanie Theobald held the launch of her latest novel A Partial Indulgence at Artesian, The Langham. She looked amazing in an incredibly sexy dress by Giles Deacon and was understandably grinning from ear to ear. The bar was packed with fascinating people drinking Champagne, served in beautiful tall flutes, and nibbling on delicious canapés. I loved the bar, designed by David Collins; glamorous with good lighting and it's easy to park nearby. I left carrying the book. I couldn't wait to start and now I can't put it down.
...Sometimes it is what we don't do, say, or wear, that becomes our defining sense of style. Maybe the same could be said of cities.
If "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" sounds like something from your paper's financial section, rather than a fashion blog, think again. On your next shopping trip to New York's tree lined Greenwich and East Village or SoHo, imagine it without its Georgian row houses, restaurants and shops - Magnolia Bakery, Pastis, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney - in their place a beltway and dense sky scrapers.
While fashion is a dynamic and demanding business, it also trades in the less tangible. Protecting and preserving a neighbourhood might not seem like a profitable business, but sometimes a long term view is the best business decision. Good to remember in harder economic times.
Thanks to urban planner Jane Jacobs, lower Manhattan's neighbourhoods were kept from being flattened and built into high rise developments and are still neighbourhoods with a sense of character. If New York without Greenwich Village, NoLita, East ...

...Ron Arad’s done it. So has Jaime Hayon. For 20 summers running, the world’s top designers and architects have descended on 370 acres in the Poitou-Charente province of southwestern France to lead weeklong workshops in a setting that feels a lot like summer camp and nothing like school. Horses, badminton, a former butchery-turned-nightclub called Porky’s—Boisbuchet is an idyllic setting that encourages free thought and creativity and lures designers and students back year after year.
