RH Inspired By: Rhymefest's "Chicago"

There is not one major label musician who can say that they do not run into label troubles or career setbacks resulting from internal problems. It is something that plagues new and old artists alike while depriving the starving ears of the fans who crave for a new meal of music. Chicago native rap battle veteran and Mark Ronson approved emcee, Rhymefest, is all too aware of this. His debut album, Blue Collar, was released in 2006 and since then the long awaited sophomore LP, El Che, has yet to see the light at the end of the music industry tunnel. Do not make assumptions though; Rhymefest is not one to be quiet as seen in his utilization of the internet to release two separate projects (Man in the Mirror & The Manual) that can be thrown in the “free album” category rather than the internet mixtape bin.
Don’t get things twisted though, the internet is a double edged sword and as easy as you can make a name around these parts you can break a name. Rhymefest knows all too well the dangers of the net when half El Che was leaked onto the internet via a stolen iPod. Now the haunting of this internet game has come back to him with the recent leak of his video for the first single off of El Che, “Chicago.” The video recently appeared all over the blogs in a ...

Puzzles of the day

There are 2 things which are puzzling me at the moment.
First thing:
How can someone who can sing like this -

spend most of his time singing like this-

Underlying facts: this is Jahn Teigen, Norwegian singer. The first video is from the musical based on a story from Malleus Maleficarum“Which Witch”, where he plays the evil executioner. Obviously, he has a great powerful voice and is a good actor. When we see something like this, we don’t want to miss it and try to find out more. We did. And we found the second video and many more like the second one. My question is – why waste your talent on something that people that cannot sing well do? The singers that sing the type of songs from the second video, would not, at least most of them, would not be able to sing something like the executioner’s part in Which Witch. That is one of the reasons they sing cheesy romantic songs for mediocre ladies.

Second thing:<...

Belvedere Vodka and The Richard Young Gallery

A vodka launch seems like a good idea, especially when it's on Mount Street, my favourite place to shop. Belvedere Black Raspberry Vodka sounds so chic. With Pam Hogg DJing and endless trays of tempting cocktails it was going to be quite a party, but I had to keep my head clear as I was on route to the Richard Young Gallery.

Warholesque features eight artists' take on photographs taken by Richard Young; including Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk and Kay Harwood. It was nice to see Richard the other side of the camera and hosting a spectacular party with his beautiful wife Susan. The exhibition is amazing and the gallery is so worth a visit but be careful when you go downstairs as I nearly lost half of my silk coat when someone behind me stepped on it whilst I carried on, still we had a good laugh.

Thinking Big - The Eighties Returns

What is it about the Eighties that has seeped into the collective fashion mood? Or more to the point, what is a girl to do with monster shoulders, top knot bunny ears and puff ball skirts? Judging from the autumn/winter 2009-10 collections, quite a lot.
If the shows were inspired by the era of the supermodel, big hair and even bigger shoulders, it was as much about the confidence and upbeat attitude that goes with it - and let's face all three are big on attitude.
It started in cold dreary February during the collections when grim weather was matched by grim economic news. Marc Jacobs' inverted triangle silhouettes and bright candy colours were the first signs of thaw, giving way to an Eighties New York club scene and pure fun with dressing up. At Louis Vuitton, Jacobs' Desperately Seeking Susan meets Marie Antoinette girls had everyone dreaming of modern dandy flourishes like cut out lace, sash ribbons, chain link necklaces and bejewelled...

The Shopper: Geodes Are the Latest Nature-Inspired Trend

In fashion, earthy, nature-inspired trends tend to evoke a familiar palette. The vivid greens of plants, the browns and blacks and whites of animal hides, an occasional splash of ocean blue. But now, enter geodes. Simply sliced agate and sharp-sided crystals project a raw, unaltered pureness, yet...

The Museum of British Folklore event

The last time I had a night out with James Long it took me a week to get over it, so this evening we're taking it gently. Meeting at Burlington Gardens for Haunch of Venison's opening of Thomas Joshua Cooper we were taken aback by his work. The exhibition, True, charts a two year journey to the Polar Regions, travelling to some of the most isolated locations across the globe, taking images with his 19th Century Agfa camera. The gallery was packed with guests clutching bottles of beer, eager to look at the dramatic and lonely pictures.

Impressed and humbled it was time to move on to The English Folk Dance and Song Society for a fundraising evening in aid of the Museum of British Folklore Tour. Resembling an old fashioned garden fete, stalls served plates of freshly cut ham and asparagus. As guests arrived garlands of daffodils and ivy were placed on their heads.

Suitably adorned - and with the help of a few glasses of Champagne - we soon got into the swing of things. Morris Dancers put on a fantastic display slapping their thighs and wielding sticks. I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't a Maypole, as years ago I used to be quite good, however with the amount of Champagne consumed it could have all gone horribly wrong. At dawn the host Simon...

Rupert Sanderson's foodie tips

I had lunch at Busaba on Bird Street yesterday.
By my reckoning, the Busaba restaurants are pound for pound the best restaurants in London. The food is great, and there is a distillation of all the learning from Wagamama: service is rapid and smart and the seating is wonderfully democratic without the utilitarian canteen-ness of Waga's.
But, it is the interiors - done by Aussie architects DCM - that push it to a higher level. As a lover of food, I'm in heaven.
Top dish for me, pumpkin curry with jasmine rice.

In addition to living the gestation of four collections of shoes, the Sanderson household has had a productive 12 months.
As well as having a child (another boy), my wife Rowan launched Park Stories for the Royal Parks - www.parkstories.org.uk  - an idea she approached the parks with this time last year (before we could have known the eventual launch date and due date would be the same day!).
The idea was to commission the country's best short story writers to each write a story set in one of the eight Royal Parks. Launched in May for summer reading, they have been a real hit - pass any Daunt Books and you'll see they've taken over the windows (www.dauntbooks.co.uk)!
The hope is that this is going to become an annual event, so find a deck chair and get reading.

Best In Show

I really loved the winning garden - the Telegraph Garden, which won Best In Show.
I also really liked the Laurent Perrier garden - I loved the simplicity of all these variations of green that then had just one flower bed of really deep maroons and reds. It was really beautiful.
I took masses of pictures - I always do - and the colours and flowers I see at the show might well end up as a print on a bag or a dress or a shirt or tie in the coming season.
I also took a picture of the Paul Smith rose because it brings back nice memories of when it was named that back in 2000.
It's a really great day out and very inspirational.

I was in Dublin last week as we made a bag and a men's T-shirt to raise money for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer. It launched in Brown Thomas and they sold 1,000 bags at 35€ each over the weekend which is fantastic.
Now I'm back in London and there is so much I am busy working on as ever. Anyone interested in cinema should definitely see the new film directed by Steven Frears - of The Queen and My Beautiful Laundrette fame - Chéri. It is well worth a look.

Lara Bohinc visits the Louvre

You must see the Bijou Art Deco Et Avant-Garde exhibition at the Musee des Arts Decoartifs in Paris which is on until mid July. It is just amazing!!
The Art Deco movement allowed jewellery to transform itself from decorative craft into modern design, into something that became wearable art sculpture emphasising the modern era.
The pieces, by Gérard Sandoz, Raymond Templier and George Fouquet, are out of this world - closer to sci-fi Martian-designed ornaments than Twenties fashion accessories. In the exhibition it becomes evident that the style really matured and became complete in the Thirties and early Forties when it became less rigid, more feminine. Perhaps the name avant-garde becomes more appropriate then.
It is sad to see that jewellery after the war somehow retracted into historic pleasing rather than innovation and modernity. The Fifties brought us cascades of flowers and it seems like the pre-war sophistication somehow disappeared - and with it the knowledge of exquisite craftsmanship and innovation. From there onwards everyone was playing it safe. Modernity was replaced by simplicity.
Until recently.
Many fashion designers have rediscovered art deco jewellery and have repackaged it for a new generation who may perceive it...

Anything Needs Time To Become Timeless

I used to design a collection, present it once I thought it was perfect and finally put it into stores. Then sometimes it wouldn't sell for the first few months after it hit the shelves. Unfortunately it was often the designs I loved the most, the most modern and the most timeless pieces.
This is what happened not only to the Marina and Eclipse collections but also recently to one of my all time favourites, the Coco collection. The design is bold without a doubt - metal discs folded around pearls - they are not just geometric and protruding but also somehow delicate and very feminine. In my experience anything that has a round shape sells, no matter how big it is, so I was quite surprised by its lack of brilliant performance.
In the past I have learnt that most people need time to understand good design. In this way jewellery is much more similar to product design, where good design can last a lifetime. Fashion is more about trends and what you see one season you better buy now or say goodbye to it for ever.
So, we used to launch collections in this fashion-like manner, bringing them out and killing them before they even had time to breathe. Not anymore. Now if I really like something and believe in it then I will insist on giving it enough time - until p...

Italian Affairs

I'm sorry I've been away so long - I spent most of April away and two of the trips I made were to Italy.

First to Bologna, to the leather trade show Lineapelle. Anyone who is in the shoes and bags business goes there - this is where you can purchase leather with all the trimmings. I hate trade shows but what needs to be done needs to be done so I put my flats on and brave the halls (twelve of them!). After a couple of hours everything looks the same, leather after leather, all blurred into one big leather vision. I drink Diet Coke like water, trying to keep myself alert.

Two things alarm me though: one - the lack of visitors. Usually it is packed by 10am, this time it is half empty even in the afternoon. Two - the boring selection of colours. Everyone is playing it safe. Recession has really hit this industry - this is screaming at me from every stand I see.

Second trip was to Milan, to Saloni del Mobile - the biggest show for the furniture industry. I don't do furniture yet but since my background is in product design I need to do some research. I have been thinking about doing some small home accessories and lamps so I better see what is going on.

Here it is totally packed with people! They haven't heard of the credit crunch obviously - wh...

Virginia Bates cooks up a storm with Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo gave a launch for The Cooking Recipes selected by Prince Don Paolo Borghese, sounds pretty grand and it is. The book contains 19th Century recipes chosen for his guests.
It's an impressive book, beautifully illustrated, and I was thrilled to be given a copy. There is one snag; the book is written in Italian, so it may be a while before I cook one of the dishes, but I'll certainly have a go.

Follow my blog with bloglovin´All Saints dress as borrowed off my best friend :D(Topshop shoes)No make upFirstly, thank-you to all my comments and new subscribers, this all becomes more and more exciting each day for me!My best friend has lots of nice clothes in her wardrobe but isn't sure how to wear them and she has given me this amongst others to play with. To be honest I would just wear it with black hot pants and heels as it does all the talking alone! Otherwise black skinnies/leather bomber jacket would be rocking too.. I love the sheer back and how the material blows and plays on a gust of wind.Meanwhile I'll probably be testing out the borrowed clothing pile later on!Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.

cc@mam→AFURI

The Viral Marketing Videos That Still Make Me Laugh One Year Later!

BRANDED DESIGNERS - Creative Marketing Techniques For Designers | Styleapple.comNike came with their A game when they put Kobe Bryant and YouTube together.  It has been over a year since this video surfaced and it's still paying dividends for Nike.   One true measure of a successfully viral video marketing campaign is not necessarily when the video hits its first 1 million views, but rather when other viewers take the time to recreate or imitate what was done. I've embedded the Kobe original and two of my favorite "after market" versions if you will.  Awesome stuff.  I laugh every single time.  :)
