Q+A: Renato Preti

Renato Preti could have retired. Now 53, the Italian made his fortune in finance, most recently as co-founder and managing partner of Opera, a Luxembourg-based private equity fund that invests in small lifestyle companies. (Opera owns a majority stake in B&B Italia and Unopiú, among others.) But early last year, Preti left private equity behind to start Skitsch, a new brand of furniture and accessories with a covetable roster of designers, a 6,500-square-foot flagship in Milan, and a business plan aimed at upending existing distribution models. Preti spoke to I.D. about the venture shortly before it debuted at the Milan Furniture Fair in April.

Grandes perdas…

14k Fraud In Our Shop

It was only three days ago when I heard the wonderful news that a very nice Belgian gentleman came to our Sloane St store and loved our Sun and Moon ring so much that he bought a necklace to match. We are talking fine jewellery; 18ct gold and diamond stuff, so the bill came to just over £14,000. He was apparently so pleased with the purchase that he even hugged our shop manager! Great news!
Today is the day when it all turned around. My business partner Ernst called me to tell me that this was nothing but fraud and basically the guy never paid for the pieces!!!
The way this Crimewatch story goes is like this:
1. Smooth looking man came to the store and agreed to buy the two pieces: Sun and Moon ring and Solaris necklace.
2. We asked him to make a bank transfer since we have had a bad experience in the past with credit card fraud.
3. He came back to the store saying he had made a bank transfer. In fact he only put a cheque into our bank account; big difference since cheques take three days to clear.
4. Ernst called the bank enquiring if the money had been transferred. The bank told him that the funds were on the way, not telling us it was only a cheque that was actually put in the bank account.
5. We released the pieces to him.

A Designer Going Bust

Have you read the news about Christian Lacroix going bankrupt last week (if not read about it here)?
Of course he was running at a loss of €10 million a year, with a turnover of only €30 million, so even a child could see where this was leading - but I can't feel anything but sorry for the old man.
He had a dream - and fashion is all about the dream - but it is not a dream, it is a business.
There isn't a designer who didn't notice shrinkage of their wholesale business over the last year or so and wholesale dependant designers are much more vulnerable to the whims of their retailers than the ones with their own shops (raise your hands for ChanelHermes and Louis Vuitton, who are not doing badly at all in these har...

A day at Ascot with Stephen Jones

Who better to have as your host for Ladies Day at Ascot than, the maestro of milliners himself, Stephen Jones?
The Royal Enclosure states that a hat or substantial fascinator must be worn, no bare midriffs or miniskirts and halter neck and dress straps; at least one inch. The rebellious side makes me almost want to break the rules but think perhaps my midriff is best kept under wraps - and anyway wouldn't want to upset the Palace. With my amazing Stephen Jones hat, Thirties bias-cut chiffon dress and Galliano jacket, there was no way I wouldn't get into the Royal Enclosure.
Guests for luncheon had to be seated at 11.15, the pre-starter (amuse-bouche) at 11.30, between courses there were fashion shows from Luella, Gieves & HawkesVivienne Westwood and of course Stephen Jones. At 2pm we rushed to the balcony as Her Majesty, in powder blue with ma...

Manhattans in Manhattan

An impromptu trip to New York, how fab!
Going to miss the Lulu Guinness 20th anniversary and launch of her Scholarship at London College of Fashion (see who did make it to the party here), but I know it will be great fun and a huge success.
Arrived late Saturday evening and went straight to Public; a cool restaurant on Elizabeth Street. They do a great Manhattan.
Beautiful sunny Sunday morning, took the train then ferry to Fire Island. It's like going back in time, no roads, no cars, no boutiques, no rush, just the occasional deer. Long wide beaches of white sand, no bars and no sun loungers; heaven.
Only means of transport is by bicycle or by hopping on a boat to the next bay. Stayed for a couple of days until the weather broke and then went back to Brooklyn for the start of "Music and Art" a four day festival. It's a bit like Edinburgh with every nook and cranny rocking, performing and partying.
Went to Jack Pelican where Sarah Bereza is exhibiting. I volunteered to take one of her smaller paintings back with me and deliver it to the Saatchi Gallery. Always like a challenge!
Over at Bushwick, Roberta's an organic pi...

Virginia at the Royal Academy Exhibition

The theme for this year's Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is Making Space and indeed every conceivable space was covered with art by amateur and distinguished members of the Academy.

The summer party was glamorous as ever; girls in heels that have never been so high teetered precariously across the cobbled courtyard - the reward a glass of bubbly and plenty of delicious canapés.

There seemed to be more art there than ever. A stunning silver sculpture by Damien Hirst Saint Bartholomew Exquisite Pain maybe a bit too reminiscent of Gunther Von Hagen's Bodyworlds but nevertheless, magnificent.

A crowd gathered to admire a large frame displaying individual glasses of sundaes with silver spoons; in fact it was our dessert. Beth Ditto (looking amazing) performed outside, her eye make-up an art installation in itself.
DID YOU SEE? What other beautiful girls attempted the cobbles at the RA E...

Virginia see Tracey Emin's new exhibition

Those who Suffer Love, Tracey Emin's new exhibition at White Cube Mason's Yard, is her first for four years in London and the opening party was packed with her many admirers and fans.
It's essentially a drawing show but still includes animation, photography, sculpture and large embroidered blankets with her life's journey stitched in.
The show is a personal diary and her honesty is shocking, moving and sometimes painful. The delicate neon signs of her poetry are beautiful - it's a great space.
Having feasted on the art everyone sat around in the courtyard drinking from bottles of beer and getting smashed.
So very Tracey.

Virginia meets Susannah Hunter at Chelsea

Arrived at Chelsea Flower Show and there, looming over the entrance six metres tall, was the official creative for 2009 designed by Susannah Hunter - my lovely Susannah.
The purple anemone was everywhere; on carrier bags, banners and on the merchandise. I managed to grab a load of postcards and notebooks but not enough.
Then there were the real flowers, so incredibly perfect and immaculate; not a bug in sight. Think they were hanging out in my garden.
There is so much to get round at Chelsea and I haven't got acclimatised to crowds after the quiet of my rock last week (that's Ibiza - read the blog here). The courtyard garden was my favourite, perhaps because it was more rural and realistic.
And what did I come away with? A Susannah Hunter handbag of course.

Virginia's Eivissan Quest

Saturday afternoon, I'm skiving off to Ibiza flying Ryanair from Stansted - a pain to get to but it's cheap and direct. Here's the catch, after one hour 10 minutes: "This is your captain speaking." He announces that due to a mechanical fault the plane is turning back to Stansted, the radar's packed up.
Listen, I've done this journey enough times, I could steer it myself - although the Pyrenees could be a problem for Health & Safety.....
So we land back at Stansted and the next drama is that two guys (thankfully) were caught smoking as we re-fuelled - two police officers came on board, arrested them and carted them off.
Finally we got to Ibiza six hours later. Arriving at the house to the smell of pine trees, the silence and a million stars falling out of the sky, it was still worth it. Now is the best time to come, no tourists, no traffic and my rock was deserted.
Definitely an understood beach code going on here: the morning set dressed Ibiza-style minimalist, very low-key, some doing yoga, then 2pm the workers taking a lunch break. 4pm, the cool crowd, who have just got up, arrive in jewelled harem pants and accessories and stay till sundown - bliss.
Flying back after five days, Ryanair must have rallied; brand new plane and to...

New London

With the return of Burberry and Pringle to London Fashion Week for autumn - and new store openings from Mayfair to Marylebone - London is clearly the place to be.
Store opening after store opening can seem like leftovers from the days of boom, but they keep coming and business is good.
The new wave started with Martin Margiela on Bruton Street, and Jean Charles de Castelbajac on Conduit Street, both launched last year. Alber Elbaz opened Lanvin's men's store on Savile Row, and Michael Kors came to London to celebrate his launch on New Bond Street this April.

Vogue's Emily Zak names her favourite beauty products

If distress makes us rush back to the things we know and trust, it has never made more sense to be trustworthy and well known.
A year of history in the making, these are the circumstances that will shape a generation and new world view. Fashion designers and beauty brands would do well to take notice. Many have. If "more, more, more" was the motto for economic boom, then heritage and investment are the new ones.
Recession is a good litmus test for the things you can't do without. Gym membership... check, high speed broadband...check, personalised stationary...check, double caramel macchiato...nix. The beauty products on my bathroom shelves have not only survived redundancy, but a look at these mainstays might say something about current events:

  • Kiehl's light Creme with Silk Groom: this is a brand that has inspired cult like devotion in New York since 1851. It both appeals to and represents the American belief in hard work and no nonsense efficiency. Products and packaging are simple and to the point - and products do what the labels say they will.

Paul Smith's week includes the latest graduate shows

Everybody should really be paying attention to all the fantastic degree shows going on over the next couple of weeks - tonight is the Royal Academy (www.royalacademy.org.uk) show - my tip for that one is Jack Newling. We've got the menswear show coming up in Paris on Sunday - and all seems under control. We haven't got any samples yet but I'm sure they'll all come in.
We'll have a cocktail party in Milan this week to mark men's Fashion Week there, too.
There are lots of good things coming up at the Southbank over this summer too - it's the 16th Meltdown Festival right now. It happens every year and it's really great. In 2005 it was curated by Patti Smith, another time it was Morrisey and another by Grace Jones. This time it's by jazz musician Ornette Coleman.

Robyn "With Every HeartBeat") Imagens:

Savannah and Sienna Miller visit Tracey Emin

Wednesday night saw me manically running from a very exciting show shoe meeting with Sienna and Fran Burns, our stylist, to a talk hosted by Louis Vuitton and given by Tracey Emin at the White Cube about her latest exhibition, Those Who Suffer Love.
I have always admired her work from afar but being in such close proximity to it I was blown away. It is honest, pure and actually very beautiful. She explained that, contrary to general opinion, it is not a vomiting of herself and her personal life onto a chosen medium, but a carefully considered and planned response as a way of understanding and "filing" important moments and experiences in her life.
She is not trying to figure anything out, the exercise is not cathartic rather she is documenting something already figured out. She explained that really what we see is what she chooses us to see, it is not over exposition in the slightest but a profoundly controlled and calculated method.
I like the mystery in this, like really we don't know the half of it. We see only what she wants us to see....

Rupert hits the Lido

Summer, I feel, has properly arrived: we've got through a whole week of Wimbledon with no rain (god isn't Murray playing out of his skin?). But the true mark of the arrival of this scarcest of things is our first family outing to the Parliament Hill Lido.
Every year we marvel at its wonder - and talk insanely about "shouldn't we be doing this EVERY day?" Some years ago it was given a generous refurb and has been lined in stainless steel which helps retain (some!) heat but also gives the impression of swimming in the sea. At 60 metres long and 30-odd metres wide, combined with its great views, it gives a fantastic sense of space.
The wonderful combination of hardcore all-year-rounders and raucous families makes this Thirties swimming pool a true gem.

Rupert Sanderson in Monaco

Ian Fleming would have been proud.
Flew down to Nice on Monday with nothing but a change of shirt (bespoke Turnbull & Asser now you ask), and my dinner jacket packed into a piece of my own handmade luggage. Took a helicopter from the airport to join the FT Luxury Conference where I'd been invited to join a discussion panel.
Some real heavyweights were there: Mr. LVMH, Mr. Tods - some of the biggest money men in the business and 400 paying delegates. So not too intimidating then...
The first day wrapped up with a dinner under the stars and a great after party hosted by Tyler Brule. However, to my mind the evening had only just got going and it was over to the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Lady Luck was with me and after a few hours at the tables the not inconsiderable cost of the trip had been recouped with a little left over for a trip to Hermes on the way to the airport.
A late night in Monte Carlo is not what most people would consider good preparation for going head-to-head with the biggest clothing and watch manufacturers in the world, in front of a paying audience - (as a small factory owner I was on a panel debating the merits of "Own...

Beyoncé wears Thierry Mugler in concert

Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, oh no no!
Ms. Knowles was kind enough to invite me to her O2 gig last night - and what a show!
Along with some pretty stellar fashion sorts; Alber Elbaz and a newly inflated Thierry Mugler amongst others, we were sat with Roland Mouret and treated to two hours of mind melting R'n'B-ootiliciousness.
Is there anything this girl can't do? From performing acrobatics, suspended above our heads (still belting out the tunes), to strutting the stage, Mugler-clad, like some sort of futuristic super model, we were all blown away.
Who's crazy right now?

Rupert gets in a knot

I'm having nightmares ever since my mother-in-law identified a virulent plant in the garden as Japanese knotweed. It grows unbelievably fast; you can almost see it growing.
She said two things which have combined to plague me at night: it can break through concrete and if you uproot one, two will grow in its place.
It starts life looking like an asparagus spear and grows straight up to about 10-foot-tall in a matter of months. Reminds me of the Greek myth in which planted dragons' teeth grew into soldiers.
I'm in Italy at the moment preparing for mortal combat when I return.

Paul Smith visits the Carlos Cruz-Diez exhibition

There is a fab exhibition at 22A Cork Street, at the Mayor gallery - it's by this gentleman who was born in 1923. His name is Carlos Cruz-Diez and the exhibition is called Colour In The Making.
It's relevant to me as it's to do with stripes and colour - he's created these really amazing optical illusions. You look at a piece - they are "pieces" not "paintings" - and if you stand right in front of it, it's purple; if you move to the left a bit, it's green and if you move to the right it's multicoloured.

He's from Venezuela and he is described as a "leading kinetic and op artist" and "considered a pioneer of colour and theory and perception".
What is interesting is that he's the numero uno of this type of work - but hundreds of people have done it since. I'm interested in it because it's a play on colour and that's sort of what I'm known for.
The exhibition runs from May 28 - July 18: http://www.artnet.com/mayor.html

in a daze

One of my birthday presents off my best friend was this All Saints Bandeau dress I'm wearing, I was truly delighted and surprised when I ripped open the wrapping! Next is the All Saints Bleeding rose vest, which I love but don't wear often?! Strangely although it's a white vest top it does not pair with anything and is actually a very particular item.. I think due to the shape? It bunches up with jeans and is a bit too long to be worn with hotpants..Heatwave making its way to England I've been told.. yay!Otherwise thankyou for the lovely comments I'm getting, I've been enjoying reading all blogs so if you comment leave your blog on it and I'll have a good nosey through!

Chances Are Good, That The Next Steve Jobs Is Already In Your Social Network

BRANDED DESIGNERS - Creative Marketing Techniques For Designers | Styleapple.comLet's talk about social networking for brand development.  I'm a perfectionist. What that means is that I try to control all aspects of my company at all times, 24 hours a day. My web developer has threatened to fire me many times, but I refuse to let him because he's an asset to my business. But, If I could, I would do it all myself. From web development, to marketing, branding, to doing my taxes, to taking out the trash ...ok maybe not taking out the trash, or for that matter, doing my taxes. Anyway, the truth of the matter is I can't do it all. And chances are... neither can you.Designers are designers, we are not accountants, marketers or sales people. I know in the beginning, you may have to wear all the hats, especially if you're working on a limited budget. I understand that. But when you can network and meet people and share resources that...

Can A Hunch[.com] Help You Build Your Design Firm's Brand?

BRANDED DESIGNERS - Creative Marketing Techniques For Designers | Styleapple.com The other day I played around with hunch.com, a new website that answers your questions. As I got more into it, I realized that it also allows you to add your own questions to their database, which immediately intrigued me. First, I had to figure out what the answer would be... and of course, the answer is Styleapple... So what is the question? As I was thinking on what the question should be, I realized that that my mindset suddenly moved from the CEO of Styleapple to the Designer or Design Firms who would be looking to use our branding design services. So the obvious question was "What Design Portfolio Website Should I Use?" To get to the answer, a user would then be asked a series of questions that would hopefully lead them to the most accurate answer. And it was...

All Saints Elgar Cowl CardiganAll Saints harem pantsRiver Island bootsIt's my birthday tomorrow and Fathers Day (plus my dads birthday was on Tuesday) so we are off to see Transformers tonight and have a meal in celebration. This outfit is smart but alludes casualness due to the shapes. Very slouchy. I love the weekend because I get to play with make up and clothing! Puppy Molly is fine, my older staffy Calvin is getting on with her better everyday and learning how to tell her off when she nips him on the tail!I found an amazing checked shirt by Topshop but got it on ebay for £9 and one pair of white skinny jeans came back in stock from All Saints, I nabbed them but was later refunded no explanation so I have to presume someone else got them online before me? Not happy!Make up So far I've bought Purple Rite lipstick from the new Mac style warriors collection and I was wearing it here with Mac plum lip liner....

Loving you is easy..

All TopshopPets at Home collar (lol)I haven't been posting enough outfits, this is simply due to me really living in tracksuits! With a young puppy you can't really go anywhere, and she isn't vaccinated fully so I really cannot go anywhere (unless she is carried around for socializing!)I really just went upstairs and rummaged for something that was scruffy but with attitude. I found the socks/leggings combo really cool and I love my new hair which I had done last Friday (before puppy)!I've been out of the blogging world, so I'm hoping tonight I'll have the time to look around all the new outfit posts I've missed :( Hope everyone is okay and thank you for the condolences on Lily x

Currently at the vets and on a drip Lily is stable this evening but one of her sisters has passed away. Lily is the strongest in the litter and the breeder is hopeful of her survival. This news has dominated my day, I went through classic stages of shock, grief, anger, back to grief, then forgiveness. I just hope she recovers and I still get to meet/love her.Hope everyone has had a happier day than me! I am at the hairdressers tomorrow, the roots aren't looking too good ;). I like navy with red lips..I've been photographing lots of outfit posts in my little old suburban street because it's always just before I go out! There is massive interest from the public if it's done in busy areas for some reason?! I get beeped at from cars and other really weird experiences.. does anyone else get this lol?! People really want to know what we're up to!Otherwise I went to diagnose my iPhone at Apple last night, and all it needed was resetting, I didn't feel very clever at this point.
